Writing Advice
Hi everyone :) As a writer, I would like to know : what are the elements / storylines you guys think should be incorporated more in stories ? What clichés should be watered down and what makes a good plot / an interesting character according to you guys ? I mostly write love stories in the YA/New Adult genre, so I was hoping you could help me improve myself : ) Thank you.
Hi I'm a writer myself elements that should be included more are definitely not based on the time frame of the story Chiches that should be watered down also depend on the person writing the story and the story line itself what for sure makes a good plot depending on the story is introduce a characters past take the reader back a little bit also to make an intresting character write down on paper what the character does and try out different things to see what works best for you and your story
Good luck on your writing I hope this helps :)
When reading I absolutely HATE sexism, and sexist stereotypes. I mean, c‘mon, this world does not only contain muscular jocks and skinny nerds as males and the basic *** or the “I just need to take my glasses off and find a man to be happy”. I crave characters that feel real, and that I can relate to. Besides, (my opinion), if the story is epic and big and enormous the “solution” shouldn’t be small and simple. The plot shouldn’t shrink together at the end!
@inventiveOcean3313 One thing I’ve found as someone who reads a lot of books, is that, particularly in the YA genre, a sweeping cliché is the character looking in a mirror as an excuse to describe their appearance.
Good luck on your writing!

Many romance storylines are cliche and overdone, I think creating a character that does something unexpected will get more people talking.
Also, many people today will stop reading if the main characters have kids, just because its another cliche, which is interesting to think about!
Ohhhhh I'm a writer too! A forum full of potential writer buddies.

in general, i think overall just delve deep into your characters before you start your piece so you can fully understand their actions and beliefs. might take you somewhere unexpected in your story :)
for romance, the cliche i hate the most is the love at first sight thing. there're very few things that do it well (for any kind of couple regardless of sexuality). Also, even though your story is the romance genre, don't focus 100% on it. the reader needs time to understand the setting, characters, and motivations.
but most importantly, do what you think is fun! it's your piece, so if something feels right, then do it! Trust your writer gut!
More diverse characters and realistic relationships should be included. Tone down the 'love at first sight' cliché. Good plots have complex conflicts, and interesting characters show growth and flaws.
In YA/New Adult genres, I believe incorporating themes like self-discovery and resilience can resonate well. Also, moving away from clichés like 'misunderstandings that a simple conversation could solve' could deepen your narratives. To create captivating plots and characters, focus on their development and the choices they make in the face of challenges.
