October 6th - Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination
For those who do not know, it is Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)!
As such, we have a few things lined up during this week in order to honour this observance. Feel free to join in, if you can! - We encourage everyone to share and strive to learn about mental illnesses during this time.
Yesterday's focus was on "Getting deeper, learning more". This sought to encourage others to try to learn more about mental illness, whether it be regarding their own or another's, or about mental illness in general. It also hoped to show the various resources and communities in which one can reach out to for support regarding mental illness.
Today's focus is Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination.
This years theme for Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is Stigma Free.
Being Stigma Free means learning about and educating others on mental illness, focusing on connecting with people to see each other as individuals and not a diagnosis, and most importantly, taking action on mental health issues and taking the StigmaFree pledge. [Source].
So far, we have focused on introducing the topic of mental illness, and have begun to learn more about various mental illnesses via several mediums. This is a great first-step when it comes to addressing stigma, for awareness and education are key!
But today in particular, wed like to get into that further by directly tackling the topic of stigma itself.
Here are a few activities you can get involved with for this day today on 7 Cups:
