Forum Discussion: Stress of Higher Education!
Stress Of Higher Education:
Starting out college is a major milestone of our adult life. This time an individual shapes his or her perspective, on which depends their entire life. This journey is exciting as well as full of challenges. As much as this is a learning experience for them, it is also a really stressful time. The challenges on the way on one hand help us grow to become who we are but also act as a nudge to the students to be competitive and to come out with flying colors which sometimes causes a lot of stress.
The first encounter with stress is when you enter a new life when starting college. The new faces, new atmosphere, everything makes you feel a little stressed as to where you would fit among these new people. No matter if you are an extrovert or introvert, each and everyone of us has to start afresh for this new life. For some it is easier to fit in, for some it is a little harder. Its also true that many people form lifelong friendships with their college friends. College represents a great training ground to enhance your socializing skills, which would serve you well when you enter the real world.
Its not to be forgotten that the main goal of a college student is to earn that college degree. Other than countless tests and exams, the modern college student also has to be informed about technological developments because most fields are tied to these advances. Indeed, college life is very demanding. To be successful, the college student has to learn how to manage stress. If stress is left unchecked, it can affect their mental and physical health.
Some tips:
-
Find out why or what you are stressed about. Some of the most common causes of stress are homework, grades, bullies, or just school in general.
-
Now if your problem is finishing an assignment, you should start with the work for the class you like the least.
-
Don't procrastinate!
-
If bad grades get you down realize that it is only one bad grade and that you will get a chance to redeem yourself.

What images spring to mind when you hear the word ‘stress?
Stomach pains and sleepless nights. Challenges and mountains to climb over. Memories of past difficult events which I got through succesful.
How do you act when you are stressed?
I bite my nails, I talk less, I become quick-tempered. Suddenly I want to be hugged a lot. Also, I try to run away from my stressors by procrastinating. I escape in the worlds of fiction which saves me from thinking about the current situation.
What steps can you take to avoid being stressed?
Definitely better time management. Learning to seperate my achievements from the core of self-value. Talking about setbacks and finding courage to ask for help. Take better care of myself by sleeping, eating, relaxing well.
How can your long-term outlook on life help you to deal with stress?
Any stressful event is only one moment in time. It will pass. My existence is made of many, many hours of love, joy and laughter, of warmth and hope, that focusing only on the current feelings will inevitable create a skewed picture of my life.
What things do you do now to help relieve stress?
Talk more with my family and friends about my problems. Reminding myself about the bigger picture. Deconstructing negative thoughts pattern. Using 7 Cups to receive support and feedback. Not running away from my problems. Reading funny manga. Listening to great music. Drinking tea before going to bed at night. Regularly doing something nice to myself ^^
I am a freshman in university and still learning, but I've relized that life at university, as awesome as it is, heightens my depression even more that it was before. Just the stress and the early mornings and things like that. What helps me? Exercise. I recently started going to the gym more and that really helps my outlook on life. No matter how busy you are, you should work out. You always have time. I'm taking 19 credits this semester and I can find time every day to work out, you can do it too! It really makes a huge difference in one's life.
While I certainly experienced stress during my undergrad programs I think things were faily balanced and I managed it pretty well. It was grad school where stress reached an unhealthy level. My health got much worse, I wasn't getting proper answers, and getting appropriate supports was really difficult. People will talk about how there are disability rights, but getting that documentation is difficult and then the things that are discussed only seem to apply to course-based programs.
I quit. It was mostly about my physical health, but it reduced my stress level a fair bit too.
Hi there, it's just incredible article, so truthful and helpful. As for me when i went to college, especially at the beginning it was really stressive time. I didn't want to go there, cause you know, new people, new places. But i knew that the main goal of a college student is to earn that college degree. So I had to get my education and if honestly i was cheating and ordered my assignments [removed by AffyAvo] and i know it's bad. But after few month i've found a few friends and my opinion about study have changed.
@Jac901 Please no advertising on 7cups and if you knew it was bad to do we wouldn't want to suggest a place for other students to do it!
