Self-diagnosis

Syn July 2nd, 2014

As I said in my introduction post, I've been observing my behavioral patterns and emotions and have been doing so for over a year. Recently I've gotten a hold of the 9 criteria of Borderline Personality Disorder and found that I met 7 of them. In order to be diagnosed with BPD one only has to meet 5 of the criteria, so I diagnosed myself with it because I don't have a therapist. I guess if I can get a hold of the techniques used in DBT then I won't need one, but then again I might need one anyway.

Your best bet would be to seek out a therapist to confirm your self diagnosis. In the mean time I would definately look into DBT. My girlfriend has BPD so if you ever need to chat with someone about it I can ask her for some advice. Feel free to message me if you like

Naturally.

I agree, self-diagnosis is a tricky business.

You could even google"Med-student syndrome" or hypochondriasis. Even the pre-professionals pathologically self-diagnose!

Set aside your self-diagnosis. You need an objective opinion.

All the best

That's the thing. It's easy to jump to a hypothesis and then look for evidence that supports that hypothesis. And it doesn't just apply to self diagnosis either.

I'm an analyst by trade and I often gather alternative perspectives to ensure that I'm retaining objectivity in my analysis.
