How to i tell my doctor I think I might have BPD?

communicativePapaya1462 December 9th, 2016

So I've been having issues mentally for a while now but recently I came across an article about BPD and after reading i noticed I related to about 90% of the things it talked about, and after researching the condition more I'm now pretty sure I might have it, but i dont want to go to my doctor and "self diagnose" myself but I also know i withold lots of information from my doctor that would help them diagnose it properly.. so i was wondering how I could bring it up with my doctor without sounding like ive just Googled my symptoms? or how did you get your diagnosis? any help would be appreciated 👍

Hey, @communicativePapaya1462 !

I'm a medical student in the UK and although not a doctor yet, I feel like I have a little thing to share with you that might be helpful.

We've been learning about how to interview patients - amongst the many acronyms we're flooded with is 'ICE': Ideas, Concerns and Expectations. When talking to a patient we're actually encouraged to address and ask them about their ideas surrounding what might be causing their symptoms!

My suggestion would be this. Go to your doctor and have an honest conversation with them about your symptoms. Include everything, both your symptoms that fit with your concerns about BPD and any that don't. Once you've been able to have a discussion about your symptoms and how they're affecting you, it's quite possible your doctor might actually ask you what you think is going on! If not, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for you to say that you're concerned it might be BPD - it's part of a doctor's job to talk you through these concerns and ideas!
