Emotional Struggle, Mindfulness & Compassion

Quick question, guys.
When you struggle and feel trapped in an emotion (anxiety, fear, shame, etc), and you want to be compassionate to yourself with the intention to soothe yourself, get back on your feet, and ride back on the horse of your life: What do you do?
What are your practices to soothe yourself, reconnect to yourself, and rise strong?

I would love to know the answer to this question as this is a huge huge crippling issue for me right now.
If I had to contribute to an answer, I guess, I get temporary relief from burying myself in audiobooks (Agatha Christie Poirot).
