ACT Guide Lesson 2 Forum Discussion: Psychological/Emotional Suffering

QuickJazz January 10th, 2016

In the ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) guide on 7 Cups, it prompts us to think about ways to approach our psychological/emotional pain in order to reduce our level of suffering. The way psychological/emotional pain affects us can vary, but it can also be hard to deal with whether for the short-term or long-term.

As part of Lesson 2, it states: "The constant possibility of psychological pain is a challenging burden that we all need to face. This doesnt mean that you must give up and trudge through your life suffering. Pain and suffering are very different. The word suffer implies that there is a burden you are unwilling or unable to carry, which means that we play a part in our own suffering."

So, my first question to everyone is:

1. What challenges do you encounter when dealing with psychological/emotional pain? - Are you suffering?

Throughout the guide, it provides various exercises we can try step-by-step with the idea that "[w]e can learn how to respond to pain in a way that does not make our suffering worse". This leads me to my second and last question:

2. What have you tried or would you like to try in order to overcome your psychological/emotional suffering?

But, I investigated such feelings, and found I was lonely.

This site has helped me become introspective. Keenly, as depression has come in waves, I can read more on people's experiences in their emotional turmoil. Emotions have tossed everyone around. I am on a mission to discover where the tornado might lead.
