Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In todays discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here  and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy. A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldnt integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, youd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but itll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
Another example might be education. I dont really care all that much about grades for my kids. I mostly want them to learn and enjoy learning. We talk about what they learn, we draw things, they make their own educational videos, they explain things to me in their own words etc. I want them to have a system of learning and refining their perspective on things. If they have this system, then having good grades will be a natural result of enjoying learning.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages. Or, zooming back, think about this leadership development program. We could have an arbitrary goal of training a certain number of new leaders to serve our community; or we can co-create a system - this leadership development program - that helps people become leaders. The natural consequence of the program will be a higher number of trained, competent, and strong leaders that can better support our community. Â
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
@GlenM
The post helped me look at things from a different perspective. It was really helpful.
The key system that I want to set in my life is:
1. Focus on my strengths more. It doesn’t mean that I will not work on my major flaws, I will. But, most of the time I try to “fix” things just because I ignore my strengths. So, I want to focus on my strengths.
2. Caring less about what others “think of me” and overcoming my fear of rejection. I always give all of me so; people can “accept” me and I can “fit in”.
The 3 behaviors I can implement to help me grow the new system in my life:
1. Practicing self-love and self-acceptance.
2. Sticking to my own principles and beliefs.
3. Appreciating my progress and hard work.
@GlenM
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I think the most important thing for me is to find the thin line between self care and care for others. I tend to give, but not think of receiving most of the time, which can sometimes take a toll on me. Regarding to the article, I think I also have to start believe in my own strength and power and set goals that I can surely achieve, in order not to get demoralized by failure. I am a perfectionist and I need to accept that there is always a way to improvement, therefore learning and progressing is far more important than having things done perfectly.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
- Focus on self care more than I currently do.
- Understanding my self worth and limits better.
- Setting small steps when willing to achieve a certain goal.

(Question: What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviours you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life? )
A key system that I need to set up is having an organised plan for the day as my day tends to flow by because there is no plan for the day
3 behaviours that need to be implemented into my life
a) Planning my day the night before by using a to-do list. This behaviour would allow me to wake up with an already planned day. The plan also should be free-flowing as a rigid plan would cause procrastination.
b) Allocate time for non-work related activities. This is a time where I am free to do anything from sleeping or watching movies. This behaviour would give a break to the brain as well as reduce some stress.
c)Distribute tasks evenly throughout my to-do list. This means that the tasks must be divided equally for school, 7 Cups, health and my art hobby.
..........
1 think a good. System. To help me met my goals on cups is to make a plan on how I can get to where I what to be and stick to it.
The things I would need to do to get where I want to be is.
1 knowing the requirements of the goal and make a plan how to get the requirements done and what steps I would get to do to get there.
2 I would get know the area better better like being active in groups or helping out in lsr.
3 ask questiond on how things work and ask for help if need help with something.

I want to establish a system that help me wake up early in the morning and go do workouts
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Stick to a schedule ( sleep at a proper time | I am a night owl )
2. Diary the progress
3. celeberate small successes
Order healthy foods online.
1. Buy vegetables
2. Buy fruits
3. Less chocolate bars
My current goal is to succeed in my upcoming exams in Feb/June 2021. The system I'll be using is not overthinking about what I will do after I've reached my goal or what will I do if I dont reach my goal. I'll be focused on the work by Professors are currently giving me.
Three ways I can gradually grow in my new system are: I'll start by being more focused in classes and on completing my assignments.
I'll then develop a better view of doing the work that would make it easier for me to get things done. I tend to procrastinate because I know that in the last second when I'm cutting it close to the due date I work more efficiently. So I have to see my work as something I love like art or sports.
Lastly I'll be prepared for every class by reading ahead after each day. This would not only help me to be prepared for class but itll help me to understand my work better and that means I would be able to explain it better to others.
@JoeyTribbbiani best wishes for the exams
@specialSnow9454

I need to set up a system to reduce procastinating. To do this, I will need to reform some behaviours I have. Some of this are disorganization, anxiety, doubt.
My system will be to have a planner to write daily tasks I need to accomplish. I will also need to manage my anxiety by obsevering my body and doing some activities that usually calm me down. As for doubt, being organized and prepared will remind me that I well-equipped for the situation.
