in the world of lantern much dwells beneth the earth, for what above terrifies even the bravest man, garguantuan 50 foot tall beasts, of all shapes and sizes, with few things connecting them, their monstrus appetite and their ability to mutate to their desire.
nobody is sure how these creatures appeared but its clear this world was once like the one i reside in now.
darkforceis powerful, its main cause is the ability to mutate based on temporal energy, essentially causing a very useful near miracle mutation. it distorts time aswell, causing things to age differently.
those who were exposed to darkforce at birth or throughout their lifetime often mutate, the most popular mutation being the ability to use darkforce to their advantage, these caused abilities that had a price, while i had the ability to materialize darkforce there were many other abilities, some could speak the tounge of monsters, some could petrify, others could teleport. abilities could be anything, but always at a cost
the cost was that darkforce channeling through your body takes a toll, vanta black patches on your skin, or an appendage made of pure darkforce, antlers and wings were common among these.
you also paid the price of being an outcast among most
below the earth dwells a variety of creatures, humans ventured there after the monsters appeared. making cities by a network of tunnels,
the most amazing was found in the deepest and coldest part under the earth, the elves of darkness. creatures that long ago strayed from the path of humanity, they use the darkforce and stone together to create giant cities deep in the earth, they need no sleep food or water, nor air. the cities are dark with no lights, yet all can see. elves are not born but rather made, woven from darkforce and into matter. the darkforce taken directly from a well at the heart of their city, a hole in reality where darkforce flows outward, once the child is made it is still relatively human in soul, however it looks like a writhing mound of flesh, then you hold it into the well, and it grows into a fully fledged elf, then the elf channels the darkforce to dig out stone to create housing of its own. and soon create a job.
most of these elves spent most of their eternal lfietime in meditation, only rarely venturign to do work for the common good. while only a few worked tirelessly to create new elves.
(reminder everything in lantern is about triple to octople the size that it should be, however there are many many artifacts under the earth)
somewhere underground in the world of lantern lies a city of its namesake.
the city of lantern is underneth a field directly below a great giant apple tree, from which we harvest and eat the roots.
the direction in which the celestial object in the star sets (it wasnt exactly a sun) there was a giant city of monsters from which we scavenged.
there were 3 main jobs in the city, all in perfect balance, none seem higher or more important than another
the workers: they dig things, build things, and harvest roots.
the stores: shopkeepers you usually put their wares on a rug who barter in pieces of root.
the ravens and crows: crows are people who scavenge from the outside, usually work in groups of 3-10. ravens are similar but work alone and are often darkforce users. ravens are the campions of lantern.
i myself was a raven, i can even boast that i took down several of the smaller monsters using my powers and a very large sewing needle i used as a sword.
once when i was little and a few weeks before i died, a strange man came to visit our city and to sell his wares, and to give advice. he was a gliching figure, like reality distorts around his very being, every once in a while he would rapidly teleport to a nearby location and then back, like a glich.
he offered me a blade of silver (the material toxicto montsers) and told me that i would need it to overcome a task, the blade was glistening silver, except it wasnt glistening, it had an aura of darkness. it was strucured like a typical greatsword, he offered my a shealth to go with it. the thing was that i had to return it to him and in exchange hed hold onto my joker card (my prized possesion). i cant remember whether or not i accepted his offer but either way i died, and it did have a chance to save me
i wasnt actually born in lantern city, i was found at the estimated age of 6 wandering the monster city slums by a crow group of 5. i dont have any memories of that time or around that time except what i heard from others.
i always felt at home in the monster city, in a strange meant to be way.
once when i was wandering the city, on one of my first jobs, back when i only had a few marks on my left arm. i was captured by a human living in the city, he looked like the homeless do here, from what i know he was planning to eat me, which i knew was a bad idea since i was corrupted flesh. i was bonded to a chair somehow, i think he used a power on me to make me unconscious. he had a statue that he kept in his pocket of cthulu. at this point i knew i might get put back to sleep again so i broke out of my bindings with darkforce and struck the man in his neck, i didnt mean to but darkforce flowed through my body andinto him, i could only assume it materialized in his lungs or heart and killed him, i left the corpse there and continued on my journey.
you know i had a boyfriend of sorts back in lantern, at least thats how i think of him now. it never occured to me we were practically dating back then.
his name was dan, he was quite beutiful in myeyes, blond hair, pale skin, blue eyes, somewhat messy hair but still kept.
he was a shopkeeper to whom i sold my scrap, most of the time we would say we were playing a game of game (a popular card game in lantern city), saying that i would get a littl extra if i won, i usually won but refused the extra money.
since those blessed/cursed with darkforce need less food and water i often gave the roots i earned to starving families (usually children). sometimes families would refuse my gifts thinking they were cursed (there was a form of racism against the cursed) they would look at me like id murder them at any moment and am evil by nature.
once i actually had a date with dan, he asked me to share with him some pieces of apple (a rare luxury) and a bottle of alcoholic beverage. it was a fine night, i look back and wish we kissed that day.
the alcoholic beverage was made from a special kind of root found in the direction the moon rises, it wasnt very tasteful but better than water to some. it was relatively expensive and was only about the alcohol content of a light beer to my understanding.
playing cards were traded around among children and families as trading cards, without anyone having a full deck the peopel of lantern invented a new game that they called "Game". it was played rather like war except the losing cards were discarded and not to be used again during that session. when two cards of the same value were brought against each other instead of having an extra 3 face down it was just another one and the losing side had both lost. each player also had their own deck made from their own cards, players would often bet cards as the prize, or play for pieces of root.
there was also a stragetic element to the game, at the begging you decide together how many cards you want in your hand, and you play one of the ones in your hand or choose to use one straight from your deck.
joker cards were an outside source that had to be summoned, there were only about 3 in the whole city. when you get two same color jacks in your hand you can sacrifice them to summon the joker card. if your entire deck drops down to one card it must be revealed and replayed constantly, if its the joker you lose.
aces were also stronger than kings.
i was actually a weilder of a joker card, it was given to me by one of the people that found and raised me, whom i consider my family to an extent.
often times children playing game would agree to add a special rule when they are playing together,
if someone disobeys a promise in lantern city they will often be shunned by the whole city, if this happens enough times the person may become an outcast, having to leave the city.most of the time people go to the city of monsters surviving on the little scraps they leave behind, and end up being eaten within a few years
other things like murder could also get you banished but surprisingly there wasnt much crime, practically everyone was starving, so nobody did anything to one another. there was only about 5 people in lantern at a time who could be considered not starving, usually retired ravens. there was no upper class, which is probably a foreign concept to you here.
things in lantern didnt rot as fast as they do here, it would often take yearsfor something to rot and only if its underground. people also very rarely got sick, which leads me to believe that bacteria was almost non existant.
when i came here it shocked me to find out that people bury their dead, back in lantern it was a custom for the person's family eat the flesh of the dead to help put their spirit at rest, for nobody truely deserved to suffer notbeing able to interact with the physical world. the bones now nearly clean, were often buried under the person's house, or used to create tools.
