Need some indoor/window gardening advice!

May 5th, 2017

So, this year I decided to grow a garden, yay! In addition to growing plants outside, I'd really like to start some indoor plants in my bedroom. I'd preferably like to have some window plants that I can set on each of my two windows sills, or on a small table next to the windows. I'd like to grow any plants that will not get too big or drape down planters, so I was thinking maybe herbs? I'm not partial to any plant so it can be anything, as long as it's cute and leafy. cheeky

Here are the specifics:

• I have two windows. One faces west, the other north

• US zone four gardening

• My windows are average or a bit on the smaller side (don't know the exact measurements, sorry!)

• Has to be pet/cat safe

• I'm wheelchair bound so I'm looking for plants that are "relatively" low maintenance.

I'm still doing a bit of research, but I decided to ask here since I know a few 7cuppers have a green thumb. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be most thankful! heart

Love this thread, @TrueArrow ! I'm very attached to my houseplants (I have a carnvirous plant, a Monkey Pitcher Plant which I've named Morticia after the mother in the Adams Family, but carnivorous plants are very high maintenance!). I was reading an article earlier about ideal plants for students, which may suit your low maintenance and pet needs, and it recommended geraniums - don't know if you have them in the US or if they're known by another name, but they smell lovely and are very cheery. This is the article here [x], and a picture of a geranium. ^^

Geraniums! That's a great idea, although I'm not sure if it would be a bit too big for my window sill (the flower look pretty big from pics). I know we definitely have them here, so I may look into it. Thanks for the idea! smiley

That’s fantastic that you’re diving into gardening, both outdoors and indoors! For window plants that suit your space and needs, pet-safe herbs are a lovely choice—basil, parsley, and mint are perfect for your window sills and can handle lower light on the north-facing side. Since you're in USDA Zone 4, hardy options like spider plants or peperomias might also work well; they’re low-maintenance, cat-friendly, and won’t grow too large.
