Help with art hobby

Booklover95 October 20th, 2018

Hello everyone.

Lately my depression is getting worst due to family drama and stress. So I want to have a new hobby, and I chose art.

I absolutly love admiring art, and I leave comments on artist's deviantart pages. And made me want to try it!

So I want to ask, does anyone here can give me tips? What materials to buy, maybe a cool type of art to get into? Maybe a place with tuturials?

I absolutly love nature's drawings/paintings, and for a weird reason, also sugar skull art. Maybe this helps.

Also if you are creative, please share with me! I love seeing people's creations :)

@Booklover95 hey! Maybe one thing that could get you creating art would be to participate in a "challenge"? I find myself looking at a lot of art and feeling inspired but hard to actually make myself do anything, so having the challenges gives me a little motivation :P right now it's drawtober/inktober so that's what I've been doing~

As for materials, I really like gouache and watercolours, I think they're pretty forgiving and you can still make nice stuff without needing any fancy techniques or skills (plus I got a watercolour set at the dollar store for basically nothing and it works for me just fine, easy to try out without making a huge commitment). Also just plain ol' acrylic paint can be great if you want to do landscapes and stuff, that was the only paint I knew when I was little. Of course, just plain pencil/pen can never go wrong :) there's so many mediums out there, can't know what you like or don't like until you try really :)

For tutorials, I love watching speedpaints/draws on youtube/instagram, there's bound to be lots if you just search for what you feel like trying out. I also like this girl's tutorials, I like her animals best but she does some other things too (maybe mandalas would interest you?), great step-by-steps with variants which can be a good base to learn about the subject and expand on your own. I would also say don't be afraid of references, nothing wrong with using pictures to learn!

I guess most of all, just practice lots and don't give up if things don't turn out how you envisioned :) any art is better than no art (and try not to compare yourself to others wink I know it can be tough sometimes)

@TaranWanderer

Not sure if I would be brave for a challenge. I'm way too perfectionist ;-;

About the watercolour, I didn't know a cheap alternative would work actually. I'm buying one then and looking at the tuturials ^^

@Booklover95 well the purpose of a challenge is to just get you creating (ideally every day, or just when you have time) but if you can do that without a challenge then no need :p I find they help me with my motivation issues haha so of course they're not a requirement or for everyone :)

Yup, I mean, I'm assuming with higher quality paints you'd get higher quality results, but I've personally never found an issue with the inexpensive stuff, and I think it's great for learning and exploring and practicing (also I think watercolours can come in tubes or pans, I've only ever used pans, but tubes for gouache...really up to you I don't know enough to know if it really makes a difference haha)

@Booklover95 hi! Im also (sorta kinda) an artist and I love to start with sketches. I get into fashion drawing alot because it's fun to come up with outfits, but also I love painting things I have around the house because its a chance to be creative with your canvas! for example I just painted my ukulele and it was really fun. Also I think you could start anywhere that interests you. As for supplies I think just some quality paper and pencils are all you need. When it comes to painting I prefer canvases though which you can buy for surprisingly cheap at like micheals or something. anyway, sorry this was a huge rant but I hope this helps, and feel free to message me if you have any more questions. goodluck!
