Tips To Improve As A Discussion Host

LoveLilly August 8th, 2021

Hello all the lovely discussion leaders 🥰
Today we have an important discussion for you *hehe did you see what I did there*

I am going to be giving you tips and tricks for improving as a discussion host along with some tips from fellow discussion leaders.

There are many qualities that a good discussion host should possess, such as:

- Kindness
- Patience
- Being friendly
- Welcoming
- The ability to have fun

Now onto some tips:

Tip 1:
Always greet everyone who comes into the room whether they announce themselves or not. If you use their name to greet them it makes them more likely to want to stay and join in the chat.
Tip 2:
Incorporate something that you are passionate about into it, people can tell when you enjoy a topic. Also try to make it a fun friendly place for all.
Tip 3:
Be yourself. Everyone loves a host that loves being there and is who they are unapologetically. So keep showing off your amazingness.

Tips from your fellow discussion leaders, current and former:

- I think I'd just say that it's okay to not have many people present when you're
hosting a discussion. Sometimes, the rooms can be very dry and that might feel a bit discouraging but it's completely okay and normal - Anonymous

- There usually aren't many people at the start of the meeting, so it's always a good idea to consider private messaging listeners online, letting them know where the meeting is occurring. - Explore1000

- Usually people don't have the patience to stay the whole meeting because there are so many off-topic conversations and breaks. I motivate them to stay by making the meetings as quick as possible and notifying them how far along the script we are. - Explore1000

- The community moderators are there for you, yes you. They are there to support you. Although it seems odd to reach out to them, they are nice and they can help you. To raise the number of participants, they can add a banner to notify people to join. I promise, they don't bite (most of the time)! - Explore1000

I hope you all picked up a few things to improve yourself as a discussion host. You are all amazing and fabulous for putting yourselves out there to host for us lovely teenies.
