Group Mod Role: Duties and Expectations
The aim of the moderator is not to control the room, but rather to guide it and keep the chat flowing in a positive way. It is important that you engage in conversation and offer support and encouragement to participants, as well as policing the rules.
✪ A group moderator should have high warmth and high expectations. ✪
As a moderator, you have three main duties:
➀ Welcoming and inviting newcomers to join in
➁ Engaging with and guiding the conversation
      ➂ Supervising and enforcing rules

You will be successful in this role if you:
✓ are aware of newcomers entering the chat room and take care to be welcoming and inclusive to everyone
✓ show warmth, kindness and support to guests and members
✓ keep the conversation moving forward and ask thoughtful questions
✓ maintain a high level of professionalism at all times
✓ are familiar with the chat room rules and community guidelines
✓ know how to calmly and respectfully set boundaries and enforce the rules when necessary
✓ pay attention to the flow of the chat room and who is participating in conversations, and work to actively adjust the flow to different individuals who are present

You will not be successful in this role if you:
✗ abuse your power by threatening members, deleting or muting inappropriately
✗ show favouritism or give certain members preferential treatment over others
✗ disagree with other moderators decisions publically in the support room
✗ engage in any chat room drama
✗ fail to actively participate and guide the conversation
Always remember...with great power comes great responsibility ツ

This post should help clarify things for everyone. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for posting this! I think all group mods could use a little reminder every now and then!
Thanks for this
Also, as mods be careful on what we say and how we say it! We can sometimes upset members and it's important we acknowledge when we do that as well Thank you for all that you do Heather! Mwha xxx
And this, also, is fantastic! :)
Thank you so much for this Heather :)
Thank you, Heather!
I am also wondering two things: Can we create specific chatroom rules for each room, so that members are aware of what is expected of them? Experienced members know what each room is meant to support, but guests do not and it can be embarrassing or upsetting to be told not to say certain things, especially if they are blindsided by this fact.
2. Is there a way to install a nudge button or something, even if it's just for mods, so that the chatroom rules appear on someone's screen like the references do? I'm thinking mostly for Listeners who don't remember that they are meant to act as Listeners in group support and should be on their member profiles if they wish to seek support, but it might also be useful for members.
I really really like the nudge button - maybe when you click it,a dropdown list so we can nudge about a certain rule, or the whole list....? That way they know specifically about what they should do differently..
That's a great idea, @HelenHopes! I think that only Mods should be able to use that for sure.
I think this would be very valuable. Last nights night I ran into an issue where a listener, instead of trying to helpneutralize a situation, attempted to engaged and critizea member for her beliefs - in the waiting room. This was a "listener" who was really a guest who just wanted to message her fellow members - it's really challenging when there are poor listeners who join for selfish reasons and are really just hurting the site.
I really like these suggestions Helen, especially about the chatrooms rules. It would save us so much time to be able to refer a member to the chatroom rules, instead of typing it out in the chatrooms and possibly disrupting the conversation further.
As for specific chatrooms rules, all I really have to say is that it would resolve and prevent so many conflicts/misunderstandings between members, listeners and moderators.
Thank Helen <3
Do you feel that you would be good in this role?
We would love to have you! :)
