My heart feels like its breaking

Wolfgirl23 January 20th, 2023

My heart feels like its breaking inside of my chest everytime I interact with my sister. The pain hurts so much because I can’t be her sister right now because she is not my sister right now. She suffers from bipolar - borderline personality disorder and autism. She rejects her medication and is andult. Therefore she is in full mania, dellussions, and more. I can’t keep playing along with her because I am emotionally shot and traumatized. We finally got her home and its triggering my fear really bad. Shes not physically dangerous but emotionally traumatizing.

@Wolfgirl23 It is totally understandable that you can't be there for her right now. It seems like this situation is causing you enormous pain and psychological suffering. This is a very difficult situation to deal with and it seems that you're aware of your own reaction to it. You're a very strong person, and if you decide you need to take a break, it doesn't make you a bad sister.

Unfortunately I share your situation, so please feel my understanding and how hard this is for you.

purplelady568 January 25th, 2023

@Wolfgirl23 I'm so sorry you are watching your sister fight these demons. I've also seen a sibling struggle mightily with mental health issues. It sounds like putting some distance between you and her is a safe thing for you to do right now, for your own mental health.

I don't know if therapy is a viable option, but your family may want to consider some professional help.

Also, feel free to reach out to a listener if you want to chat more. You can search for those who have lived experience with mental illness, if you'd like.

Thank you, sorry that it has been a while since I used the app. Things are calming down. I feel like I have become the big sister and she still says things that make me worry. My trust with her is gone, though I have regained some of my tolerance to spend time with her again. However, she will never really know me because she is so focused on herself while shes recovering. Things will never go back to normal, but at least theres peace.

@Wolfgirl23 I am glad you are able to spend some time with her again, even if it is shorter than it used to be. I'm sure her diagnosis and recovery will change the relationship between you, but I am so glad thst you can continue to be in each other's lives. I hope that she can get to a healthier place. I'm glad that she has supportive people during this time. Please remember to take care of yourself, and protect your own mental health too.

If you ever want to talk 1-1 about what you are experiencing, please reach out to myself or another listener. You can search for available listeners here - www.7cups.com/BrowseListeners
