I'm recovering on my own, AMA
So I've dealt with bulimia and EDNOS, small cycles of anorexia for over 8 years. For the last 2 years I've been trying to recover on my own without therpy, doctors, or any specific meal plans. I am weight restored and trying to continue with recovery. Feel free to ask me anything! :)
@HelpfulDot - thanks for sharing your story! I have a few questions for you:
- What has been the hardest part of recovering on your own?
- What resources or supports have you been using?
- Why did you choose to fight this on your own?
- What strategies helped you get through weight restoration?
- What words of encouragement would you offer others trying to recover right now?
- What has been the hardest part of recovering on your own?
The hardest part of recovering on my own is not knowing whether I'm doing things in a healthy manner, or if my mind is just playing tricks. That outside voice of doctors/therapists/family can be useful in that aspect.
- What resources or supports have you been using?
I have my partner who cheers me on, I've also found that journaling and other coping skills help me to stay on track and attempt good mental health. There is a few apps that can also be helpful in the beginning until I got the hang of it.
- Why did you choose to fight this on your own?
I was sick of hurting my family. I didn't want to give my little sisters a bad role model and I didn't want my partner worrying about me dying or ending up in the hospital.
- What strategies helped you get through weight restoration?
Buying new clothes is a huge help, and putting away the old ones. Reminding myself that I'm healthy, and my weight is good. I have to constantly remind myself of the positive side.
- What words of encouragement would you offer others trying to recover right now?
It gets easier. Your weight will balance out, the urges will die down, and you'll feel so much healthier. You'll be able to be active, your hair and nails will grow, your body will function like it's supposed to. You may not like the weight gain, but the second chance at living life is what it's all about. You can do it.
