For me my ED started as a way to cope with my depression before i reached out for help with it. After establishing the patterns and habits the ED became its own thing somewhat different from the depression.

@Sammie1997

Am ED can definitely start out as a coping mechanism to something larger, similarly to how self harm works. It's sometimes important though to find a positive coping mechanism for the negative or harmful one's, so we can overcome the negatives smiley Have you been able to find a positive coping mechanism to help or eventually replace your ED?

@Emily619

self harm is a coping mechanism for my ED but i know its not healthy. Ive found talking to people is one of the best and most effective things i can use to cope. I also just recently joined a support group which has been great!

For myself, it was a way of coping with depression and anxiety. I was also bullied for being a heavier child and I think that had a lot to do with it. Also, I think being a 90's kid and being the first generation that was REALLY surrounded "body image" and how media portrays a woman's body really did it. My generation was the first to experience social media and all of the upcoming technology which, of course, led to the existence of cyber-bullying and being constantly surrounded by people's opinions and celebrity images.

I can't exactly trace what pushed me off the cliff, but the amount of bullying since elementary school was a factor (e.g being called a terrorist and other ethnic slurs). Didn't help to have a jerk of a health teacher either.
