Gender Roles & The Impact on Eating Disorders (3/3)
Hello and welcome to our final post in this series: Gender, Sexual Orientation, & Gender Roles! Feel free to read yesterdays post here.
As mentioned yesterday, the rates of eating disorders between women and gay/bisexual men are relatively equal. This led researchers to start looking into how traditional masculinity and femininity affect vulnerability to eating disorders.
***This idea is based on the stereotype of gay men being feminine***
The above studies have had inconclusive results as far as gay men being more feminine, however, they did find a correlation between higher femininity and being more likely to have eating disorder behaviors. Other studies also showed the opposite of that!
The conclusion from this is that our femininity and masculinity ultimately has no role in how at-risk we are for eating disorder behaviors, do not fear.
However, breaking the gender roles and barriers (for example, being transgender) can be a huge contributor to eating disorder behaviors. Feel free to learn more about this here.
The main conclusion of the studies mentioned today is that transgender individuals have a much higher risk of developing an eating disorder, while breaking gender roles doesnt necessarily.
