Addressing the Myths On Bulimia: Myth #1 Is bulimia all about weight?

.

Bulimia (bulimia nervosa) is a serious mental illness and eating disorder that can affect anyone of any age, gender, or background.

People with bulimia are caught in a cycle of eating large quantities of food (bingeing), and then trying to compensate for that binging by vomiting, taking laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or exercising excessively (purging).
It is important to recognise that it is normal for people who arent suffering from an eating disorder to choose to eat a bit more or overindulge occasionally, and this shouldnt be confused with a binge.
People with bulimia dont feel in control of how much or how quickly theyre eating while they are binging.
Sufferers may have a distorted view of their size, body shape, weight etc.

Bulimia develops out of a complicated mixture of biological, psychological, and social factors, and it is a myth that bulimia is all about weight. For some, the tendency to develop an eating disorder is stimulated by a stressful life transition such as moving or going off to college. For others, it is due to feeling powerless over their hidden anguish and lacking effective skills to needed cope with negative feelings constructively. Bulimics may use food intake and weight control to find refuge from everyday emotional conflicts.

@MorgiePositive

That's a great point, and one which I hope to address further in a future post.

Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. Bulimia can indeed affect anyone, regardless of their gender or sex. It is not a certain look or profile, but a mental illness and eating disorder.

You are completely correct, and I find that men can be sometimes overlooked as bulimics. This should not be the case.
