Learning disability!

I am extremely severely dyslexic. I am functionally illiterate, and am currently using voice recognition software to even be able to write. I use a screen reader to read text online. My dyslexia affects every aspect of my life, and only becomes more cumbersome as I grow and social expectations become greater.I am constantly looking for others who might be able to share my experience with dyslexia.

I cansay my dyslexia is same as yours. Believe it or not challenge yourself and try reading or writing a bit by yourself everyday. Start by making a journal or story and reread what you have just wrote. This will help you over time and help you cope with it better. I found the more you give into it the weaker it makes you look if that's what your worried about. I am in college and I am almost done too. I know that it will be frustratingand hard at first, but it will get better.

Thanks for the encouragement! I forgot to specify in my original post, but I'm not really looking for coping strategies or advice anymore than a wheelchair-bound person would be looking for tips on how to walk. Making sure that that's clear is part of drawing boundaries for me, I hope you understand! :) I appreciate the thought behind your encouragement, and I'm glad you're doing so well in college! Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much! I know I'm still very new, but I really appreciated how welcoming you were to me during my first few days as a listener!

@Elliott13 -----

I have dsylexia too. My 5th grade teacher tried to tell my mom about it but she just said I was being lazy and I should work harder. I didn't get any help for it growing up. Back then they were just learning about learning disabilities. I had to learn on my own how to read and write properly. I always depended on visual things to help me cope. It was a struggle. I do practice and I try to read as much as I can. I found this helps me a lot.

I am also dyslexic. I didn't get tested until I was in my first year of college when one of my lecturers asked me had I a learning disability after reading an assignment I typed. I worked my ass off in college and come out with a 1:1 nursing degree. When I look back it makes sense, I always thought I was slow/ stupid. I have accepted myself a lot more now and am not ashamed. I use the tools I need to in everyday life and I get by just fine :)

I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was in 5th grade. All the way up until then my parents told me I was lazy and didn't try, but they didn't see how hard it was for me to learn. Getting diagnosed with the LDwas the best and worst thing that ever happened to me. It was the best because now my parents and I understand why it takes me longer to read things and why I can't spell to save my life. It was the worst because it KILLED my self confidence as now i feel very different than other people.

On a different note, what are some of y'alls worst "fears" as a dyslexic? Mine is getting called on in class to read.

I was in the exact same situation as you, except I was diagnosed only a few months ago... in the middle of my university degree. Don't lose confidence over something like this - dyslexia means we struggle with certain aspects of learning but we are more talented than others in other areassmiley

I've had dyslexia since the 3rd grade and I HATE it I mean now I'm in college and I enjoy reading and writing but college is so damn hard at times.
