Seasonal Changes

Emily619 October 16th, 2018

As they say in the southeastern US, happy fall, y'all! Fall or autumn can be a nice buffer in between summer and winter, but the temperature changes can pose hardships, especially for those that need accomodations. For example, if you live in an area that gets harsh winters, it may be extra difficult to drive with vision impairments on icy roads or use a wheelchair on an icy outdoor ramp. What challenges do you face with the colder temperatures, and how do you overcome those challenges?

This time of year isn't typically cold enough where the cold is triggering serious issues for me. The weather changes can though, from what's known it's mostly due to the change in pressure.

The cold mornings can be more difficult with feeling stiff. I also do worry about all the contagious illnesses that tend to start in September and hang around through most of the winter. Even minor illnesses can lead to serious problems and there are also more serious things circulating like the flu.

The triggers I can't really do much about. I can watch the other triggers that I do have control over and pay attention for prodromal symptoms to catch those early and use medications.

For the stiffness, giving myself a bit of extra time in the morning, dressing warmly and staying indoors is helpful. For illnesses, I don't really do much different - hand washing, hand sanitizer, not touching my face when out, trying to avoid contagious people - I do that year round.
