When is something a disability?
Hey there!
I was just wondering when something is a disability. Could you have a disability but not really feel disabled?
I'd like to hear your thought about this :)
I feel like any type of impairment can become a disability given the wrong set of circumstances. So some things may not normally be an issue but one day a circumstance pops up where they are.
I'll go with an example that's extreme just to show how this can be.
Some is allergic to alpaca hair. They never come across this in their daily life, so it's not a problem. They work at a retail store that sells clothing, blankets, etc. One day it's decided that the store is only going to sell items made from alpaca fiber. This person can no long handle the merchandise, so they cannot help hang items, help customers, scan items at the till, etc. This allergy has not become a disability.
@Amber08 Something is disability when it limits your daily life. For example, if you are unable to travel into space due to a condition, it isn't disability because it isn't part of everyday life. But if you can't walk it is disability because you need to walk on daily basis and to perform even basic tasks such as going to toilet and preparing food.
