Catholic Man with Depression

michael1046 July 14th, 2022

Hello all! My name is Michael and I'm a Catholic guy dealing with moderate depression. I'm posting this on the off chance there are other Catholic people here dealing with depression as well or even other Christians! My faith is important to me and having a safe space to discuss mental health and faith would be desirable :)

Hi michael, a Christian brother.

Well, I'm a Protestant - but we have the same Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I'm very old, 69 years old, so I guess you find younger persons here to write to.

But we have a body/soul that can be sick with depression and other things. And we also have God to help us.

All the best, Helga.

Hi Helga! Thanks for your response!

It is good to remember how our body and spirit are connected and how when our body is sick or suffering then our spirit suffers in some way too. We are both body and spirit :) I'm 28 but you probably have great wisdom to share and much I could learn from you.

Nice Michael.

We can talk if you want to.

Friend - I like to think that we have body, soul and spirit. Soul (mind/heart/feelings/thoughts), spirit - where the Holy Spirit of God comes to dwell. I'm very humble to write that. This awesome God comes to take place in our bodies. Well - the Bible say: We are a temple for the Holy Spirit.

Hello@michael,

Any illness is not good for anyone. God has assured us that his living spirit in us helps us when we are weak. He heals our broken hearts.

I don't believe in God ( I do not act it out ), and I'm not an atheist either; I wish to be ( man without God is nothing ), but I'm not. I have social anxiety; my depression is derived from that.

@ioan489

Wonderful ioan. Thank you for writing here. You say "I wish to be". I understand it like you want to be a Christian. It is the easiest thing in the world to become a Christian. Just look at:

John 1:12

12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

"him" here is Jesus Christ. You can start reading the Bible - John is wonderful to read.

It is sad that you have social anxiety. There are groups at 7Cup doing with Anxiety-support. Maybe you will look it up.

See you later ioan!

Do you guys struggle to pray when dealing with depression?

Helgafy July 18th, 2022

@michael1046

Michael.

I have had depression (taking med and feeling good) for 27 years. I think to prey is like breathing. I was without med for a time, very depressed. I don't think God got many prayers from me then - I was feeling so bad. (But He heard my cry and sent me to a doctor who gave me med). I don't think God asks more from us that we can handle. He is love. If we cannot pray because of depression (which can leed to less consentration) I think that is OK for Jesus Christ. But he sees our heart and want to put light in there again. Afterall He is the Light of this world.
