Should I post this in the depression forum?
I've stumbled upon a text based "game" that puts you in the shoes of someone with depression and forces you to make choices based on scenarios that you are given. I found it hit some very good points that would both support those going through depression as well as bring those on the outside into the fold a bit so they can better understand what someone in their life might be going through without their knowledge. My question is whether or not it is appropriate to post in the depression forums for all to benefit from.
Game is here:http://www.depressionquest.com/
I personally haven't played it, but if you feel like it would benefit others, then it is completely okay to post it. :)
But, it might be good to state that there is a bit ofcontroversyregarding the game and Zoe Quinn, the creator of the game. It's mainly only known in the gaming/gaming journalism industry though.
Can you explain the controversy part of it? Is it a problem with the game itself or the way it presents depression?
It's not necessarily the game itself, but mainly because Zoe Quinn is the creator and her relationship with Kotaku Journalists. If you google her name, there's quite a bit of back and forth with some people defending her and others against her, but the entire controvery was one of the reasons behind #GamerGate and #NotYourSheild trends on twitter. It has also been connected with Anita Sarkeensian (Feminist Game Critic on Youtube)and The Fine Young Capitalist (Feminist Game DeveloperGroup)
I'll just leave a few articles and searches from various websites. Please note that they all have their individual viewpoints, and I am not condoning any specific one as I don't want my own opinions to influence others. The main thing I would encourage everyone to do is not just read articles that are baised to only one side, but provide both perspectives.
Great idea! I might have made some different choices if I'd played that game while I was depressed. Playing it afterward, playing the choices Idid make vs. the ones I could have, made me cry. The gamewas prettyright on.I think it's a great educational tool.
Yeah I certainly made a lot of choices that were the "best case" scenario since I'm not really in the hole anymore. I do like how the most "obvious" choices are crossed out though a lot of people not experienced in depression might be confused why.
Hmm, that's a good thought. It would be cool if the developer added something so if you mouseover a crossed-out option, it says something like, 'You feel way too exhausted for that!' But I hope people get it ?
