How do I bring up to mu family that I think I might be depressed

lyf2021 September 2nd, 2021

I'm from a south east asian country and although my family is loving and supportive, we just never really talk about feelings or mental health all that much.

I don't really know how to bring it up to them that I think I might be depressed. I have been working with a therapist and am getting screened for depression and anxiety soon.

Feel like I am kind of stuck, I just don't know what to say to my family about this.

Hi--that makes sense. Your family is generally supportive but emotional/mental health things just aren't something you usually discuss with them. So the thought of talking about it with them is a bit uncomfortable.

HERE is a resource I found from NAMI that seems like it might possibly be helpful. It offers some suggestions for when to disclose mental health issues, possible things to expect that might happen, and how to go about discussing/explaining it.
