Occupational therapy

I've never really understood occupational therapy. I've never gone to a session. However, a first grader that used to visit me in the mornings had occupational therapy on Mondays. That was a little confusing because he was a first grader; what kind of occupation does he have except being a student? Anyway, he worked on hand and other motor skills there. So, I'm assuming it is a physical therapy where people develop motor skills.
