Quiet here. How are my little VA peeps doing?
Hello from someone in the northern Virginia area. Looks like I belong to two location threads now.
@huggerofcats
Two threads = twice the fun!
Hi from right outside of DC!
@lovelyllama13
Hi from Kentucky!
Hi,
I am not from VA, but am heading there in the next 6 months or so for a nice vacay in Vicksburg !
@SHEAINTGOTNOSHOES
Have fun!
Thank you, it is a slight challenge since I became somewhat agoraphobic and have rarely left the house in 3 years, but am determined to regain my independence. I made my first solo trip to England in 1983 at age 22 and stayed 2.5 months, found and apt, found a few jobs and survived just fine. Have travelled solo for years, but lost my mojo, the trip to VA will cement my finding it again.@Emily619
@SHEAINTGOTNOSHOES
That's amazing you got to have the wonderful opportunity to visit England - and to enjoy it as well It's definitely a dream of mine to visit a foreign country, especially England because it's so rich in culture, history, and their beautiful lifestyle elegantly tops it off. I hope Virginia will allow these stellar opportunities just as England did, good luck!
@Emily619
Hi,
I do not know your age ( I am now 56 ), my first trip over was in 1983 when I was 22 and still in college. I have been to England 8x in my life with the longest stay being a year. I also have been once each to Spain, Austria and Ireland, a few times to Canada - so by no means a world traveller, you can easily find people who have been to over 20 countries including far away places like Asia and Africa, and more unique places like Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. I encourage you especially if you are in your 20s or 30s to get out there and see the world, it is easier when you are younger. I am in fairly decent shape, but I am obese and have arthritis in both knees, things I did not have to cope with in 1983 - so save up those pennies and have a croissant in Paris, an Eccles cake in England and some real perogies in Poland !!!
@SHEAINTGOTNOSHOES
That sounds absolutely delicious!! I definitely hope to travel and experience as much of the world as I'm able to, afterall who wouldn't? I just finished my first summer job working for my state's university's college of agriculture, so I may highly consider and encourage myself to save up my pennies for some foreign travelling I am sixteen, actually! So hopefully when I begin university in a couple of years I may have the lucky priviledge to study abroad. You definitely sound like a world traveller to me, though. Compared to someone like me who's never been outside of the American borders, I'd call you a world traveller And, yes, what's travelling without tasting the authentic food each country has to offer?
@Emily619 16 ? The world is your oyster, my love, go out there and grab that brass ring, try to make sound choices, so you don't get to become my age and live with a gazillion regrets of things have done and not done.
@SHEAINTGOTNOSHOES
I'd say you're very accomplished! Afterall travelling is something every age can enjoy
Hello from Farmville! (not the game, but the VA town)
@BookGirl1212
Hello, hello! Do you play the game as well?
@Emily619 I don't because I don't have the storage space on my phone. (Do you literally have to farm in the game? Because I've killed pretty much every plant I've ever had)
@BookGirl1212
No idea I've never played! I'm sure the actual city is better, though
@Emily619 It's more of a small town, because you can literally run into pretty much everyone you "know" at resturants xD
@BookGirl1212
Ah, yes, I live in a small college town (although I'm still in High School) of about 5,000ish. Do you enjoy living in a small town?
@Emily619 Most of the time I like it, but I do wish there was a better bookstore.
@BookGirl1212
Book stores are definitely important, and I can tell they're important to you as well based off of your username What're your favorite genres?
@Emily619 I go from fantasy to fiction to sci-fi. A lot of times I'll just go down the aisle and pick up random books by the same author. What genres do you like?
@BookGirl1212
Those are amazing genres! I enjoy YA (Young Adult) books and fantasty the most, I haven t really gotten into sci-fi but I do enjoy sci-fi movies such as Interstellar and The Martian One of my favorite authors is Drew Magary, you should definitely check him out! Just a heads up he does have quite a colorful vocabulary to say the least, as he probably drops an F-bomb or other word that d fall under the spectrum of colorful vocabulary words almost every page or every other, but he s definitely an engaging author and thus my favorite. I ve read three of his books, Postmortal, The Hike, and Someone Could Get Hurt. Postmortal is his most famous book, and essentially kicked off his career as an author. It s also not to be confused with The End Specialist as that s what it used to be called. Someone Could Get Hurt is also wonderful, it s a memoir of his parenting experiences while his children are growing up. It s pretty funny! It also has a former title, F**king Up the Buttons on a Babygrow. The Hike, finally, is his newest work and it s sort of a take off off of Alice in Wonderland, and probably my favorite. He s also written Men with Balls, a sports dictionary, however I haven t read it but I m sure it s an entertaining read like all of his works. He mostly aims to write for an adult to older young adult audience (hence the language), so I do enjoy it as I m 16. He also has lots of articles online as he s a sports writer and journalist. Anyway, do you have any favorite authors?
@Emily619 He sounds interesting; I'll definitely look for his name the next time I'm in a good bookstore. My favorite author has to be J. R. R. Tolkien, and I've been trying to collect all the books he's written (along with the ones his son has edited and published). Since there are lots of simliar names/names that were written one way and then changed in later works, it really helps take your mind off of current problems. [the movies are also quite binge worthy]
@BookGirl1212
I've been wanting to read the Lord of the Rings for quite some time! Is it necessary to read The Hobbit first?
@Emily619 it's not really nessacary, but it can provide more details about Bilbo's first adventure. The Hobbit isn't as detailed as the Lord of the Rings because Tolkien wrote it for his children.
@BookGirl1212
True true! How many books of his have you read?
@Emily619 Counting the Lord of the Rings as one book, I've read 5 of them. I actually own 9, but I have a bad tendancy to read them and cross-reference every little page number mention so it takes forever to read them. And the more unknown books (like the History of Middle-earth series by Christopher Tolkien) are surprisingly hard to find.
@BookGirl1212
Wow, that's so awesome! Do you have a favorite book by him?
@Emily619 Probably Unfinished Tales. It has a lot of backstory for little details, like the Palantíri, or a list of the rulers of Númenor. (Also sorry for not responding earlier, I forgot I had an account on here and had to go through my email to find it)
@BookGirl1212
No problem! I'll have to check those out What're the main plots?
@Emily619 Of Unfinished Tales? It basically adds in all the details that were "left out" in other stories (The Children of Hurin, and a lot of the stories in the Silmarillion). Sometimes it compares Tolkien's original ideas on the story to how it was actually published/interpreted.
For example, there was a long bit about a pin (The Elessar; it had a jewel/stone set in it that allowed the person to see "... things that were withered or burned healed again...") that Aragorn was given. There were two versions on how Galadriel (she gave it to Aragorn) could have received it (Gandalf may have given it to her, or an elf that loved her). It sounds really boring/confusing when I say it, so it might be better if you Google it. [I know I really messed up the Elessar part]
@PippaCalisto
