Carnival in Rio de Janeiro
Hey everyone. I hope all is weel with all of you.
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the main festivity in Brazil which earned the distinction of being “The Greatest Show on Earth.” The Rio Carnival starts on Friday until Tuesday or just a day shy of Ash Wednesday, a significant Catholic tradition which signal the start of Lent. I will be sharing a little with you all about this festival so we can celebrate together. I hope you all enjoy.
Brazil’s best-known festival is probably carnival. It’s celebrated across the nation and is linked to beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. The festival takes place over about five days. The most famous carnival is that held in Rio, where dozens of samba schools parade through the streets accompanied by colorful floats and dancers as part of a competition to find the top school.
Samba, ballroom dance of Brazilian origin, popularized in western Europe and the United States in the early 1940s. It is a very important part of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The top samba schools would go around the streets of Rio to perform the samba before the Sambodromo was built to facilitate this tradition. The exotic nature and sensuality of the samba is only enhanced by the flashy costumes of the participants. But these costumes are not chosen because of aesthetics but rather they form part of the story.
