Penpals! 💌

hambagucat August 18th

Hey everyone!

I've recently been thinking about trying out penpaling as a fun way to connect with people from different parts of the world.

There's something so fun about exchanging handwritten letters, sharing stories, and learning about different cultures!

I'm curious—has anyone here tried penpaling before? If so, what was your experience like? Did you use a specific platform to find pen pals, or did you connect through other means? I'd love to hear any tips, stories, or advice you might have for someone just starting out. ❤️

Thank you all!

Hello there! 😊

I'm thrilled to see you're interested in penpaling! It's a wonderful way to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I have never tried penpaling before but I can help you navigate places for penpaling at 7 Cups.

To find pen pals, you can try joining Pen Pal Community at 7 Cups. You connect with individuals from around the globe here also on Around the World Community too.

*People experience with Penpaling do reply to this thread, lovely friend @hambagucat needs help!*

If you have any more questions or need further guidance, feel free to ask. Good luck, and happy writing! 📨❤️

@hambagucat When I was in school, writing letters was the only way to do this, but it still was something special to have a penpal from abroad. It all was so much farther away, then.

It all started by one of us already having contact to an organization for it, I don't know how she got it. But she brought some paper sheets where we could indicate a few things about ourselves, and check our favorite countries, to then at some point get an address where we could write our first letter. It was all pretty exciting and exotic. I got to use my school English to write to someone on the other side of the world.

Some years later, the sister of the girl who introduced us to the pen pal organization, went abroad for a school year, and when she came back, she asked me whether I'd be interested to write to someone she met there - that was how I found my second penpal, in an even more exotic country (as in, much more different from mine).

We exchanged letters for many years, by air mail, with extra thin blue envelopes which were actually the sheets you wrote on, and you were not allowed to enclose anything with it. When we wanted to share a photo, we had to pay much more, but sometimes, we did, and sometimes we even sent tiny, light gifts. With the availability of email, we switched to that. I think at that point, I looked for another penpal, too, and used some online org for it. Another, closer, but not less exotic country. I ended it though when she asked me to look for a job for her brother and to send him a letter of invitation ... At some point, the others fizzled out, too, mostly due to my own negligence.

Probably that doesn't help you, but maybe it gives you a peek into how the old-school way worked, back then, lol.

This is pretty interesting! And it did help a lot actually, I've been wanting to penpal specifically in the "old-school" way haha! Thank you for sharing. ❤️

I like this post a lot! I used to write back & forth to family & friends, and there was once an inmate I wrote to who was a friend of a friend. It’s rare to find true pen pals these days since most people prefer to write electronically. I’m one of those old-fashioned weirdos who still sometimes enjoys writing ✍️ on paper. Since it’s discouraged to exchange personal information on 7 Cups, it’s probably best and safer to use social media with friends and family that you are more familiar with. 🙂👍
