Incest In India

NikkiLovesYou24 March 24th, 2019

How do we deal with something like this? What goes in someone's mind? Its one of the two sides of the same coin so calling it wrong would be wrong in itself. But where should we draw the line?

Hi! I'm sorry that your post never got a reply. From what I understand, you're asking about how to deal with chats on incest, so I will address that. As listeners, we should strive to be non-judgemental, even if we are provided with information that goes against our beliefs. As with any chat, you can focus on the emotions that lay underneath the situation: do they feel embarrassed? guilty? what compels them to seek out a listener? Chats on sex-related topics can be uncomfortable though, I understand, and can walk a thin line between support or being inappropriate. As a volunteer listener, you always have the option to refer a chat if it crosses your personal boundaries and list topics that you do not take in your listener bio.

I have been incest obsessed since the early teens and still crave it , it’s been a very tough struggle for me all this while . Mom, aunts , cousins all attract me 😢

From my point of view I can say it depends on the person himself whether he/she sees incest as normal thing or it's totally wrong based on culture and norm and the community also what others consider incest is. I personally have been through incest situation where the other person believes nothing wrong with incest. Btw there is more incest cases than you think but people dont admit it or talk about it. Thank you

I am an incest survivor and I think it's wrong. It has caused me great pain and mental health challenges. I have to take medication in order to function in society. Some days fine. Other days are hard. I don't think that people should accept incest as normal. It is abuse and can cause a lot of challenges in your daily life. I hope my comments help you. Thank you.

If we are talking about first cousin marriages etc. I agree it can be hard to know where to draw the line. In western culture this would be frowned upon but in some parts of India it’s a cultural norm. First cousin marriages can lead to an increased risk of genetic disorders in the offspring, but there are also advantages from the perspective of keeping a dowry within the extended family and (in some cases) a higher chance of compatibility in the marriage. I guess it all comes down to whether or not the harm outweighs the good and as listeners who grew up in a western society I think we need to be less judgemental and more open to hearing others experiences without automatically judging something to be bad simply because that’s the way it’s perceived in our culture.
