Fear of talking ??

Mirabaker1 September 30th, 2020

Ever since middle school I've always been the 'quiet kid'. My classmates always made fun of me for it and never really expected me to say much. I don't talk much because I tend to stumble on my words and I'm afraid I'll mess something up and people will laugh at me. During online class I always mute my mic because I'm too anxious to say anything because I hate the way I talk. I'm in French class and there's a LOT of talking there and I really hate it. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to overcome this stupid irrational fear of speaking I have

When I read, I read to myself out loud. It helps me get used to the sound of my voice and makes me a bit more comfortable talking out loud.

Thank you for replying! I'll try to do that more often and see if it helps at all

I agree, talking out loud by myself has helped me. And not only for reading but just saying my thoughts out loud to myself throughout the day when I'm by myself. Also, for online classes, maybe just saying "bye" or "thank you" at the end of class would be a good start at feeling more comfortable talking. I hope this helps!
