gecko phobia

scapgm6789 March 26th, 2021

I am terrified of geckos ever since I can remember. Even saying the word creeps me out and makes me feel nauseous. It got to a point where my life is damaged because of that. I avoid traveling with my friends when I know they are going to a place that is likely to have those animals, and I keep my eyes on the edges of the room I’m at 24/7. 3 years ago, I saw one besides a drawer in my kitchen and I still can’t touch that drawer without throwing something at it to make sure no gecko will come out of it. I really can’t live like this anymore, it got to a point where my life decisions are based on this fear.

Hi, @scapgm6789 - That sounds distracting and upsetting. Have you thought about doing some internet research about geckos? I googled them and found this: Geckos are not dangerous and are a very low risk pet. They carry no diseases that are harmful to humans, and they are very rarely aggressive. Maybe by learning more about them you will become a little less fearful of them. If not, you may want to talk to a counselor to learn how to help yourself find coping strategies that may ultimately help. Best of luck as you find a way forward.

Dear Friend!  I`ve been looking for someone that shares my phobia, I am as you terrified by gekos and all kinds of lizards, camaleons, iguanas, etc. I live in México, where I can see them crossing in front of me in the sidewalks from trees to lawns, or climbing to the trees. I have a lot of big lizards in the garden and I am always afraid they will get in the house. So no pleasure in walking, staying near plants and trees (which I love), visiting tropical paradises etc. I have suffered this for many many years and it is getting worse. It is difficult to find serious articles about this phobia, and doctors promise they will help but they really don`t. As a matter of fact, I think the few things I believe to understand about this did not came from any psychologist or psychotherapist... and the worst is people always tell you they are not dangerous and your being silly or ridiculous and you should get over it.  So, you are not alone in this!!
