Pseudodysphagia - fear of choking
Hi!
I'm new here and I've had quite severe health anxiety for a little while now but recently my fear of choking has resurfaced badly. I'm currently unable to eat any solid food without having a panic attack and even soup is a real struggle. I feel so alone and out of control and I was just wondering if anything else out there struggles with this phobia? If so, how do you cope? Are there techniques you've learned that make swallowing less terrifying? Are there techniques in general you use to manage your anxiety?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I'm really sorry if I sound crazy, but I'm absolutely consumed by anxiety at the moment and it's starting to affect my relationship with my partner.
Thank you for any advice you might have for me.

Hi, I'm sorry that you're not feeling well choking can be so scary. When I have anxiety it triggers my asthma and makes it very hard to breathe and I get terrified. The fear consumes me and I usually end up calling crisis because rather than suffocate I consider terrible things; Ideation, but not normal ideation it's just that I don't want to go like that. Fear is the root of anxiety, and defeating anxiety is the goal. Fear is a dirty thief that wants to steal our joy and control. The only way and I found to defeat anxiety is to keep focus and get angry at fear. We must hate the fear and then fill our minds with goals and actively use those parts of the brain so that fear has nowhere to take hold. I could send you some links if you'd like. You're not alone they say that one in five people have anxiety and if we work together we can all defeat anxiety. I'm here to talk if you need somebody to speak with I'll check back later or tomorrow take good care don't let fear have your control it's only real if we give it our control. Take back your control focus and fight that dirty thief!

Thank you so so much for your incredibly kind and thoughtful response. I'm so sorry to hear about the things you struggle with but I admire your attitude and outlook so much! You are absolutely right, fear is the root of anxiety and I really took your words to heart. Today I was able to eat a bowl of soup in about half an hour which is a big achievement for me! I focused on my goal like you said and I didn't stop until I achieved it. I appreciate you so much and I'm so grateful for your care. I would gratefully receive any links you think might be helpful :)
