Obsessive Fear Of Death.

I had a breast cancer scare a few years ago, and since then I’ve been terrified at the thought of death. Scared of when it’ll happen, how it’ll happen, and what happens after. I know everyone is most likely scared of death, but it keeps me up at night until I cry, I run on little to no sleep. It’s hard to function during my day to day life. I haven’t left the house in two years because of this. I’m also scared of getting sick, or something medically bad happening to me. It often makes me feel crazy, and alone.

It sounds like this issue is really causing you to be unhappy. It's understandable that you would worry after such a serious experience. I wish there were words to bring you peace. I hope you find the help you need to overcome this fear.

Hey @PeachFruitCup,

are you currently in therapy? I imagine that could help a lot in understanding your condition and maybe gaining some of your life quality back.

I was also afraid of death like that when I was a teenager (not for a longer period of time though and I also didn’t have a traumatic experience beforehand) and it was terrible. What helped me a little a few years later was reading in a parenting forum about at what age children start to understand the concept of life and death and there were a lot of parents saying their children were crying over it or couldn’t sleep etc and parents giving tips in how to comfort them. Made me feel like the fear of death is just another part of life that comes but also goes. And it helped me seeing it rather as a psychological issue and not an existential one. :)

i also am afraid sometimes that I am dying when I have let’s say bad cramps in my shoulder or something like that and it helped me reading up on it (I identify a lot with the term “health anxiety”.)

nevertheless it sounds pretty exhausting and I really hope you can get through it sooner than later! Hope i didn’t misunderstand what you wrote, sending love and strength ❤️

oh and yes, it can be isolating when you’re afraid of lots of things and avoid them, so I understand that you feel alone, but I think there is a lot of people who share the same fears. I don’t think you are crazy, I think you are just stuck in a situation that is weighing down on your mental health and makes you feel shitty. Which is completely normal and understandable ❤️❤️
