Fear of hitting someone with my car

Irishdancer1234 December 19th, 2021

I am terrified of hitting someone with my car and not knowing and then driving away. Every time I hit a bump I’m worried it was a person and have to look to check. If I read about a crash on the news I’m worry maybe I did it even if I wasn’t even there

Hi Irish, I hope you are well. I want you to know that you are not alone. I have had the EXACT same fear for a while now. I don't know if this applies, but I struggle with OCD and mine stems from that. May I ask how long you've been driving? Mine has seemed to get better with time. You could also talk to a provider about this if it's interfering with your quality of life. I promise that it will get better!!

Accidentally hitting someone with a car is a fear for drivers. It is quite cautious for you to check after hitting a bump. Feeling worried about the accident which you did not do may be related to Automatic Thought. Here are some tips to stop "Automatic Thought".

In "Automatic Thought", your brain drags you through several scenarios which don't fit the facts. Doing the thought record may help this situation. These involve challenging thinking, identifying types of anxious thoughts, and forming alternative thoughts. These three steps can help to break this spiral.

1. First, write down the statement. Get a closer look at how you think. For example, I may accidentally hit that person with my car.

2. Then, rationalized the thought. By challenging your thinking, you will find out if this specific thought is rational or not. For example, I am not even there, is impossible for me to hit that person.

3. Finally, replace the statements with positive statements. For example, I am fine.

Welcome to let me know if this works for you.
