Wanting to help someone during a panic attack?

KindCass August 23rd, 2020

My friend has people that he knows that goes through panic attacks, but he's not so sure how to help them when they begin to hyperventilate and become incoherent. I was wondering if anyone has any advice to give him? (Any advice will be well appreciated and thank you for taking the time to answer)

@KindCass

At least for me, having someone talk to me and distract me really helps. Funnily enough, I am here tonight precisely because I've been on the verge of a panic attack all night long and need the help.

To be slightly more specific: telling me stories while making me laugh and frequently checking up on me usually calms me down. Again, this may be just me.

For me I get really stomach sick when I have panic attacks. So the user that mentioned a cold damp cloth has it on point! So helpful.

ask them if they need to be held. I only like that with people I'm really comfortable with but it helps.

talking me through it helps. Funny stories or memories. Maybe rubbing their back.
