Black History Through the Decades! The 2000s

Hi hi everybody! Welcome to the next day of our wonderful Black History Month event! Today, we'll talk about Black history in the 2000s!

Colin Powell

Under American former president Bush's appointment, Colin Powell became the first African-American Secretary of State in 2001, becoming the highest ranking Black man in American politics until the Obama election.

Barack Obama

In 2008, Obama became the first Black American president in US history, being inaugurated in 2009. He attended Harvard Law, serving as an Illinois senator before launching his presidential career and defeating McCain in the 2008 election and eventually being reelected for a second term in 2012.

Apologizing for Jim Crow and Slavery

In July of 2008, Congress formally apologized to all African Americans for the segregated Jim Crow laws of the mid to late 1900s as well as for slavery and building the country on the backs of slaves, many of whom were the ancestors of millions of Americans living today.

The start of Black Lives Matter

Though it gained popularity in 2013, the hashtag Black Lives Matter and public awareness surrounding the important issue began to emerge in the late 2000s, reaching new awareness after the murder of Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old boy killed after being racially profiled. Over the decades, Black Lives Matter has reached new cultural awareness, especially recently, educating millions about racial injustice in America and all over the world.
