May 2022 Events - Positive Mental Health
Hey hey everyone, happy May! Depression Support is so excited to be celebrating Positive Mental Health for Mental Health Awareness Month from May 2nd-8th.
First, let’s talk a bit about mental health and what it means to have a positive mental health. Our lovely community mentor, @ASilentBunny has shared this with us:
Mental health refers to a person’s psychological, social and emotional well-being. It has to do with how we see and perceive ourselves, what we think about ourselves and how we feel in comparison with others. It can also help us to understand how mentally strong we are, and how resilient and calm we are when we have to face some tough situations. The calmer we are with those situations, the more resilient or mentally strong we are. Here is a statement that will help us to understand what mental health actually is "Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feels, and act as we cope with life. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices."
Personally, I like to think that mental health is as important as a person's physical health which means it's sometimes neglected too. I think we can all agree that pain or discomfort is our body's way of letting us know that something isn't functioning optimally.
Now let's take a look at what makes mental health so important! Mental and physical health are both components of health and need to be taken care of equally for healthy life outcomes. Mental health has a big effect on all areas of life, academics, work, and personal friendships/relationships just to name a few. Decision making, problem-solving skills, attention and learning get affected as a result of poor health. On the other hand, being emotionally healthy can help us to perform effectively and adapt pretty well to situations that might occur in our lives as well as help to cope better with our tough days.
Now a pretty good question that can be asked is, how can I improve my mental health? That's an awesome question! Small things like eating healthy, exercising (doesn't have to be something big, just going for a walk might help too), getting some good night's sleep, talking about your feelings, having a support system, setting healthy boundaries in personal and professional spaces can definitely help us to improve our mental health! However, there are a few situations that we might feel that we are not capable of solving and feel like drowning. That's totally okay and we are always here for you! Sometimes, getting some professional help can be really beneficial as we all need someone sometimes to guide us through our dark days! You got this, there is hope and we can believe in you! It's okay to take breaks and reflect on your progress! See what you have achieved and keep reminding yourself of the goals that you want to achieve and improve the topics that you feel that you can work on!
We'll have lots of different forum discussions, icebreakers, and group support discussions in our depression support room! everything will be linked or added to this masterpost for easy access <3

How would you define mental health in your own words?
I would define it like garden that you have to take care of if you want to grow the most beautiful flowers there. Just like that picture. Mental health is in my eyes even more important than physical health...because without right attitude and way of living you cannot be really fully healthy anyway.

How would you rate your mental health right now from 0-10?
My mental health has been stable, some days are worse some better, overall good 9. :)
❤️ Thank you for this fantastic post! Your work is appreciated ❤️
❤️ I would define it as mental and emotional wellbeing, lack of considerable mental pain and an emotional satisfaction. I think mental health is essential for our happiness. Right now, I´m trying to enjoy the last hours of peace before an off-line event starts to stress me out, so I would say 5, but if I´m lucky, the rest of my week will be better. Again, thank you for this awesome work! You are astounding ❤️
@EmmaE
To me, mental health is how people perceive the world and how they're opinion about themselves, whether it's positive or negative. Their perception effects their behavior in how they deal with life and with their environment.
@EmmaE
My mental health is a 10 because I perceive myself in a positive aspect, and even though the world and people are constantly evolving I'm able to handle it.
@EmmaE How would you define mental health in your own words? Being comfortable with our emotions. Though we can't always regulate them I think the will to overcome the bad days signifies better mental health
How would you rate your mental health right now from 0-to 10? 5 Hope I'll progress (:

To me mental health is being able to handle yourself, your surrounding and the way you perceive it. Like, being in control but also letting it be.
