What Is Your (Psychological) Superpower?

innateJoy9602 September 29th, 2022

“We can learn psychological skills for living a better life. We can learn how to communicate more effectively, develop habits for resilience, and reframe our difficult experiences. But looking more deeply than skills, what are the precious attributes that form our magnificent psychological core? Here are a few to consider.

Curiosity

Among our great gifts, this attribute might seem unlikely. But consider its potency: curiosity can get us out of bed in the morning and sustain us through our loneliest times. Curiosity makes the world new each day and propels us along our journeys.

Research shows that we prefer to satisfy our curiosity even over sating our appetites with food.

Curiosity makes life interesting – and makes us interesting in the process. Curiosity says that we might be many things, but we are not bored or boring.

Love

Love of all kinds makes us feel that our lives are worth living, even during our darkest moments.

Love changes everything. Love is the seat of passion. Love is the gateway to compassion and the ticket to bliss.

To love is to be vulnerable. To love is to become more than we ever were before. To love is to feel intensely, brilliantly alive.

Compassion

While empathy is the capacity to feel "with" the feelings of another, compassion takes these feelings further. Compassion means that we not only feel "with" others, but that we feel compelled to relieve their pain.

Through compassion we learn that to be needed is sometimes as great a compliment as to be loved.

Patience

Patience says that we ought to put our impulsivity on hold while we consider our responses with care. Patience means that we take our time to live our lives deliberately and with intention.

Patience is the close companion of love. Without patience, we would never learn to be grateful or kind.

Courage

Courage means facing our dragons and shining beautifully in the light of risky action regardless of whether we succeed or fail. Courage makes us glow from within because it says that we try to do and be what is good and necessary in spite of our fear.

Courage shows that, for brief shining moments, we can step outside ourselves and be more.”

Takeaway: We can identify the amazing qualities that motivate and uphold us with a little reflection. We can recognize what inspires us so that we can more fully cultivate such traits within ourselves. All of us can start living more in accordance with our psychological abilities.

Reflection: If you had to choose one of these qualities to be your superpower, which would it be?

This article is awesome! I've been told by my friends and I've been beginning to notice that I have a gift for patience and learning to manage my emotions well in terms of expressing them in proper time and place! However this gives me more motivation to excel in the other parts as well, especially with courage. With patience I can tend to be under spoken and not vocal about certain things which I believe a person with courage can overcome easily!

I hear you on trying to foster more courage!

Everyone can use a little more :) 💛💫

I have patience and compassion. I could have more of courage. Love is a broad term, not sure what all it encompasses.

I know what you mean!

Love is a broad term, in this sense it means love of all kinds! :)

Romantic love, unconditional love, platonic, etc.. <3

It refers to being a loving person who has a lot of love to give! 💛💫

My psychological superpower is courage, because I am improving in my ability to stand up for myself and not only treat myself with respect but guide others in treating me respectively. In addition, I am not concerned of the outcome regarding my efforts to hold myself valuable and respectable. Instead, I chose to be of value to myself and others and not allow negative forces to withhold positive growth within my journey and destiny. I do this by giving myself permission to make mistakes without the fear of retribution or punishment, but instead with the mindset that I will continue to get better towards being the best person I can be.
