Unloading your Thoughts to get a Calm Mind

amiablePeace77 March 18th, 2022

Have you found yourself in this situation?

You’re in the grocery shop, your shopping list is quite long. It’s busy and there are many people trying to shop, music is playing, you’re reading the food labels, trying to figure out what is the healthiest option you can afford. There’s a lot to think about and your mind constantly reminds you

“Don’t forget to buy a gift for my friend, cut the grass, pick up the apples from your aunt,. Oh no, what can I wear for the big dinner tomorrow? And then I need to write that essay. I will never get done!”

Having that much going on in your head isn’t good for your mental or physical health. It’s stressful! How relaxing would it feel to have a mind that is calm!

Something that can help to clear the mind is to do a brain dump: writing down all the thoughts going through your mind! At first it might seem awkward to write down everything going through your mind, but by offloading our worries and anxious thoughts, it can help us stay healthy.

Solutions that we might not have thought of before can pop into our mind when we are not totally stressed. By expressing your worries on paper, you can increase your ability to focus and become more productive.

A simple brain dump can look like this:

  • I really need to finish the essay

  • Check on Maria how she is doing

  • Call the physiotherapist and get an appointment

  • I forgot to pay the phone bill

  • He really tested my patience today

When do you feel overwhelmed by thoughts racing through your mind?

@amiablePeace77 Great thread. Thank you.

When do you feel overwhelmed by thoughts racing through your mind? When I have not had enough sleep or I am hungry and in pain.

What are you currently doing to clear your mind? I am coming back to following my breath and doing visualizations.

How does the idea of writing down all the things you are worried about doing sound to you? Sounds like a great idea. I have been writing things down for many years and it does help.

I also like to read inspirational texts and write down ideas I have how to cope with various situations.

@soulsings

Using your breath, visualization and journaling are great coping skills. I can relate to what you said about being hungry or tired or in pain. Using the HALT technique can help a lot.

Do I feel H - hungry / A - angry / l- lonely / t - tired, and adding a p for pain.

I feel overwhelmed by thoughts almost all the time. Sometimes I feel like it’s because I keep most of my thoughts to myself. It could also be because I don’t trust anyone to share my inner most thoughts with. So they pile up in my mind naturally.

to clear my mind I guess right now I try to find a place on 7cups to vent. It helps.. a lot. But many times I find myself waiting for a response and then feeling left alone to my thoughts again when I don’t get a reply.

i have a Place in my phone where I keep a journal for all my personal thoughts. I have had this since maybe 2014 or so. I have 3 or 4 notepads. And I have one for sure since 2016 that is for my thoughts relating to my relationship and how I’m feeling. I like to keep a journal so that I can’t manage my thoughts and feelings and go back and see how I felt whenever I want. My feelings change so much that I like to know if I’m just overreacting or overwhelmed or overly emotional or depressed or if my thoughts are actually valid.

@greenmagnolias2404 I am glad you find places to vent.

I use my email sending myself emails or talk to Noni the bot at the top of the PM list. If you click on Noni just type journal.

Hope you get the support you are looking for.

What are you currently doing to clear your mind? get busy doing stuff to wear myself down, deep breathing, and journaling.

How does the idea of writing down all the things you are worried about doing sound to you? well I write most of the stuff down that is racing in my head down. I keep pen and paper with me all the time so when things go racing I can try to write it down. Sometimes the thoughts come so fast that I can't keep up.

It's tough when the mind does not want to shut off. Having always a pen and paper ready is a great idea to be able to write them down.

@XanFransisco

It must be hard for you to get through the day when there is little or no energy left and hard to do any additional task whatsoever, hugs. I hope you get the rest you need very soon. What does help you to reenergize at the end of the day or weekend?

This is a link to a video about letting go, I find it's quite calming and can help with overwhelming thoughts https://youtu.be/rSrSemQUeSI
