How to strengthen your inner coach đź’™

amiablePeace77 May 27th, 2022

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing okay.

Today, I would like to share with you something I became aware of the other day.

I started a new home project and faced some difficulties and had to realize that what I planned did not work out. All my work was for nothing, at least that is what I thought. I was frustrated and it didn't take long that I heard a voice in my head told me:

“You are doing everything wrong”

“You can’t do anything right”

“Just leave it”

This was my inner critic talking.

Luckily another voice stepped in and said:

“Remember Edison and the light bulb? How often did he try until he succeeded?”

“You are going to solve this just take your time and rethink”

Now this was my inner coach talking and a lot of what this coach told me was learned here at 7cups.

So one tool to counteract the inner critic is to develop a strong inner coach to help with the judgmental, negative and full of cognitive distortions talk from the inner critic. But how do we strengthen our inner coach?

  1. Avoid using absolute words like “never, ever, always…”

  2. Become aware of the way you talk to yourself. The inner critic loves to play the shame and guilt game with us, telling us “It’s always your fault”

  3. Validate what you are going through

  4. Practice patience, give yourself time to do things

  5. Be observant and curious what is behind a feeling you have.

  6. Is your anger based on sadness or fear?

  7. Use encouraging self talk like “You can do this”, “You did some good things in life”

  8. Practice self love because in the end, what your inner critic really needs healing

What does your inner critic say that shows they are hurting and need healing?

How strong is your inner coach and what do they do to help you maintain a healthy respect for yourself?

Hey! I'm very much cynical when it comes to things and nobody is harder on me than myself! It's hard as I was so confident and self assured when I was younger and now it feels the opposite, instead of liking myself, I start to hide away from mirrors and anything that has a reflection.

Slowly but surely I'm getting comfortable, I think self-awareness is essential, and I will always be a work in progress!

@FrenchMarbles

Fearing your own reflection sounds rough, I'm glad that you're getting more comfortable with yourself.

Mine one is s always nice, because I love myself more than anything. Does it help? No.

@impartialCup6896 sorry that loving yourself does not make all things better.

With me it means I am less judgmental of myself and so I can face tough situations with less inner conflict.

There are times when our inner coach needs and outer coach to help. Do you feel that's the case for you right now?
