I totally think happiness is a matter of perspective ..........look at the simple happiness of a child  that gets washed away as they grow..... and create or told to have  bigger expectations for them to be happy....

i look around and see people who are unhappy ...........and others discount that buy questioning why.? ...  telling them..... "they have X/Y /Z and others have it worse so they should put on a smile and be happy...."  

 I just had an exhausting circle conversation with my partner as i told them " i am unhappy they do not see  or engage with me as much ...."

then they said "well they like to ignore me and watch to see if i am in a good/ happy mood before interacting"    they seemed to miss the fact this is like a dog chasing its tale getting no where and at a complete stand still....

people chase fake goal lines for happy...... "i will be happy when i have X amount of money or security" ....they reach that and the goal post moves .... now it is double the amount or what ever.....

people think others can make them happy so chase that to only find each person does not have the key to happiness either......

being happy is a  inner choice regardless of Income/  relationship status / physical appearance or other external factors .......

What does happiness mean to you? Happiness is when I feel such joy of helping others that all my problems seem insignificant in the comparison to all the suffering in this world. 

Do you believe it is a matter of perspective?  Cherishing others is the perspective that leads me to lasting happiness. 

I gotta disagree with the other posts here. Yes, happiness is a matter of perspective to some extent...but.

(There's always a 'but')

How many people do you think can be happy when they're starving? How many people are basically happy after going through repeated foul abuse during childhood? I came across some evidence of that last night. I won't drop any names but I'd bet dollars to dimes the poor girl will not become a happy well-adjusted adult. Just try telling such a person to "shift his/her perspective"l so (s)he can find happiness....not likely. Not just because human brains cannot be fixed so easily, but also because it would be stunningly tone-deaf on your part.

However you define it, for the vast majority happiness is impossible to attain without having one's basic needs met. Try being happy without food, water, shelter, & with a 50-50 chance of someone trying to k!ll you when you're asleep.

Happiness is that light feeling i have without much in the back of my head.

And yes it's not all perspective. I had been in an abusive place for a few years. No matter what I did, i could not get out of the unsafe feel and fear I had. I tried a lot of things to be happy then. In vain. Once I m out of there, i m becoming like my older self now. 

Happiness to  me means being able to support myself with what talents I have. That happiness has not yet been achieved, and I doubt it ever will.
