What is one of your most cherished childhood memories with your mother?
Mine is—
When I was little, I had a nightmare that someone was on our roof. I woke up terrified, screaming, "Vo mujhe maar dega, vo mujhe maar dega!" ("He'll kill me, he'll kill me!"). My mother rushed to my side and gently asked what was wrong. Through my tears, I told her that someone was on the roof and they were going to hurt me.
Without hesitation, she held my hand and led me to the roof to show me there was no one there. I clung to her tightly, begging her to come back downstairs because I was afraid they would hurt us both. But she reassured me with calm strength and said, "Dekho, koi bhi to nahi hai yaha." (“Look, there’s no one here.”).
Under the moonlight, I looked at her and noticed how radiant she looked. She was glowing, her beauty illuminated by the gentle light, and in that moment, I told her, "Mummy, aap pari jaisi lag rahi ho." ("Mummy, you are looking like an angel.”). She smiled, and it was the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. That smile made me feel so safe, so protected, that all my fear and the nightmare seemed to vanish.
It’s one of my favorite childhood memories with her, a moment that still warms my heart.
