@Sunisshiningandsoareyou omg these were amazing. In addicition, every Christmas season, the toy store chain made a catalogue and we always marked in it the things we want ๐Ÿ˜ we obviously marked half of the catalogue, but it gave our parents a good understanding of what we want and they could pick something out. We also always wrote a wishlist ๐Ÿ˜‚

I always loved kitchen toys, my dad even made me a stove out of cardboard when I was a child. And well, I was a big bookworm, and loved creative stuff

@sadcat13

Haha that sounds amazing, too many options to choose from and of course as kids, what's even "too many toys"?!๐Ÿฅฐ

Aww how sweet of your dad to make that stove for you. Kitchen play sets were real fun to play with. Lol I remember hosting "tea parties" with my cousins! XD Absolute fun times!๐Ÿฅน

All of them. I was smart enough to make sure every single toy I owned was a popular one. Popular to others but most importantly popular for me since Iโ€™d be the one to play with them everyday :)

@akunknown โค sounds like you were a bit spoilt๐Ÿ™‚ and for that I'm glad โคโค did you keep any of your old toys??

akunknown Monday

@Tinywhisper11

I wouldnโ€™t call it being โ€œa bit spoiledโ€ since I had to earn all those toys (bday gifts and Christmas presents being the only exceptions lol) by being a good student in school, good at home, good in public, if I was bad anytime itโ€™d be noted so if I was bad 5x Iโ€™d lose 5 toys bc they wouldnโ€™t be bought for me by anyone but bc I wasnโ€™t bad I always got the toys I wanted unless they were too expensive lol.ย

One of the times this happened that I actually remember was when we were at that old Toys R Us store and as I was picking which toy I wanted (I wanted both but was told get one now and next time get the other one but I wanted both bc I was afraid next time I came the other one wouldnโ€™t be there anymore lol) I saw the Batmobile (Batmanโ€™s car from the 1989 movie) and pointed at it with excitement!!! My brother knew it wasnโ€™t real. It was just an inflatable version of it but to a child like me it was real and drivable haha! So thatโ€™s what I wanted. But they were just displays, not for sale. But bc I was just a kid I didnโ€™t know or understand that. I just knew I saw it and wanted it!!

No. Everyone has their own agenda this year and I think I need a break from everyone so it all works out as a win for everyone so I encouraged them all to go ahead with whatever they wanted.ย

Unfortunately no I didnโ€™t get to keep any of them. As much as I wanted to and tried my best to keep them all, my sister felt I was too old for toys and threw them out. Omg I was so angry at her for that. But now everytime itโ€™s mentioned - even if itโ€™s jokingly - she apologizes so sounds like she regrets it now looking back on it even though I already forgave her and let it goย

โ€œyour very lucky to have a family โคโ€

I used to believe that as a child but once I found out what type of person my mom really was I realized I wasnโ€™t as lucky as I thought in terms of the family I have.ย

โ€œand having a nice family seems rare thread daysโคโ€

I felt like it was always rare tbh but maybe, just maybe, more so now. But idk.ย

@Tinywhisper11

Well Iโ€™m happy for you now having a family. But more importantly, a kind family. Not a toxic or abusive one.ย

Depending on who you (you in this case meaning anyone) talk to or ask, youโ€™ll probably get different answers/responses on the subject of having a family. Some people might say they hear you on always wanting a family. Others whoโ€™ve had bad family experiences may simply tell you to count your blessings.ย

@Tinywhisper11

My childhood was between 1970s and 1980s, so I believe many toys were different than now:

#1 Most girls dreamed about a doll. Our dolls were made of plastic, usually had big heads with moving eyeballs and eyelids, golden or red hair (kind of Cyndi Lauper style) and a short and plump body. They tended to lose their moving limbs after a long usage ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

#2 Many boys wanted a self-propelled toy Russian tank. It was green and noisy, made of thin metal, necessarily with red stars on its sides. There were two versions: one had a blinking light in the barrel of the gun, another could shoot with plastic bullets.

#3 Remotely steered car models. Most often they were either Fiat 125 or Fiat 126, very detailed, with their lights on. Things like RF or IR being not common yet, the remote was on 1.5 yard long cable ๐Ÿ˜‰

#4 Plastic soldier figures with a DIY painting kit. Usually they were supposed to be colourful, because they were soldiers of Napoleonic wars, or anything from 18th or 19th Century. Painting them required some skill. I still remember the sweet smell of these paints ๐Ÿ˜Šย

#5 Little electrician set, including a battery, some different lights and switches, an electric motor, a loudspeaker, a bell and the Morse code key (anybody remembers what is it? ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Receiving gifts was usually rare, children were not flooded with toys like nowadays...

Tinywhisper11 OP Tuesday

@jacek73 ๐Ÿ™‚ โค I'm glad you remember them all โค I'd like the toy soldiers to paint, and the tank with shooting balls โค toys back then we're made much better than today's toys. Did you keep any of your old toys?

4 replies
jacek73 3 days ago

@Tinywhisper11

Unfortunately not. A few years ago my son received a little electrician set - but this one was Chinese, looking colourful and nice, and more fragile - the one from the Soviet era was with no colours and really sturdy ๐Ÿ˜†ย

A tank (and a doll, I believe) I saw just a few weeks ago while I visited the exhibition about the People's Republic of Poland everyday realities in the local museum. Went there twice or thrice.

The first time I visited the exhibition it was an emotionally moving experience. As if I was 40+ years back, seeing the same nursery school or the same rooms, with the same furniture and an old tape recorder or gramophone playing some old records.

I still have somewhere at my cousin's place my first and only typewriter, I used to write some poems, too. It was completely mechanical (no electricity at all), and weighted about 25 kg (50 lb)!

@Tinywhisper11

I loved the one I used because it had quite nice font, not too simple or boring, but stylish, half-way between Poster Bodoni and Garamond.ย

In one of my schools we had wooden boards to cover the keyboard from our sight and use our muscle memory instead. There was some spacing between the keys, so if you missed hitting the key it could be really painful ๐Ÿ˜œย

I think the biggest problem nowadays for using such an equipment could be where to find some inked ribbon, made of fabric, and of the right width. But who knows...
