Starting a new life in a different country..

Am I the only one who was not excited moving to a different country?

I have always been open to try new things and meet new people but right now all I want to see is a friendly face. It’s been so hard living in a completely different environment and I feel like I’m not progressing at all even though I’ve been away from my home for 3 years now.

It is beautiful up here and life seems to be less harder than it was living back home. But I always feel like I do not belong here. Nobody is making me feel that way yet something inside me just does not feel right..

@solaria444

Hi 😊 Personally, I have never experienced moving to another country, but I moved to another town at least twice or thrice.

It is sad to hear you may still feel "a stranger in a strange land" after 3 years abroad.

I guess you have already analysed some very specific factors that might contribute to that?

For me there are some areas of importance when moving:

People and places.

For me acclimatization begins when I start to see familiar-looking faces among the people I meet for the first time. Or when I find places that are similar to my previous experience: for example, when I was living close to a railway line, being anywhere close to a railway has a soothing effect on me.

Weather and climate.

As a European I could find it really difficult to live in iron sky/no clouds conditions, too much sun and sand, or hot and humid. And I would miss really much changing seasons.

People and manners.

Personally, I could find it difficult in a country where the only language is e.g. French. Where strange people come to pat you on the arm and everybody is partying all night. Or where the question "How are you?" does not really mean somebody's waiting for a response.

Water and food.

I would not feel good drinking extremely polluted water. I don't like fish and, for example, living is Asia I would terribly miss pierogi, pasta, cheese, cakes and all those extremely unhealthy meals 😉

Memories, people left behind or unresolved matters at home.

It is like worrying about grandparents who are not very healthy, or about a younger brother. Missing a partner or a child might be enough to cancel most of the positive experiences.

Of course, this might not be a complete list...

I wonder how it is in your situation(?)...
