Understanding Anorexia Nervosa
Eating Disorder Support / by MieraCurie

...See more *TRIGGER WARNING* This post contains pieces of information that might affect your recovery. Read with caution. Hello peeps! ๐Ÿ’• Today I would like to raise awareness about Eating Disorder (ED), specifically Anorexia Nervosa (AN). ED is not uncommon anymore but the stigma and misunderstanding are still in the air. For people who have been struggling with anorexia, you know the guilt and feeling of hopelessness for recovery and the shakes you get from relapses. You are not alone and what's more important is, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. Believe it or not, it is backed by neuroscience! Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), researchers found that it is a disorder you are wired to, you did not choose to have it, it is more than that, something is actually going on! Let's get into it bit by bit! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป ๐ŸŽ What is Anorexia? Anorexia Nervosa is one of ED characterized by significant underweight, having fear of gaining weight and food restriction or calorie counting. Anorexics may or may not have the desire to be thin as like models portrayed in mainstream media but they usually see themselves as overweight. Taking a very small amount of food and malnourishment can be seen in this disorder, but some might take it really far by excessive workout, forced vomiting after food and even using laxatives. ๐ŸŽ Statistics ๐ŸŒ ED affects all races and ethnicity. ๐ŸŒ Anorexia is more prevalent to young women but men suffer from it as well by 10%. ๐ŸŒ This might be shocking but 80% of 13-year-old girls are on diets and at risk of developing an ED. ๐ŸŒ 0.9% of American women developed anorexia at least once in their lifetime. ๐ŸŒ Half of the anorexia patients have co-morbid mood disorders and anxiety disorder e.g Depression, Social Phobia. ๐ŸŒ The average onset of the disorder is at 17, but all ages can be affected. ๐ŸŒ 20% of anorexia patient remains dangerously underweight, even with intervention, but 60% make to full recovery *high hopes* ๐ŸŽ Risk Factors and Causes Genetic ๐Ÿ”ท Yes, anorexia is heritable by 30% to 58%. ๐Ÿ”ท DNA modifications can maintain anorexia but more clinical trials are needed. Psychological ๐Ÿ”ท In early studies, theories of anorexia are proven linked with childhood sexual abuse and dysfunctional family but those are not always the case and research are still going to determine other possible causes. ๐Ÿ”ท Most anorexics suffer from low self-esteem, feeling of wanting to control a part of their life (hence, restriction of food), anxiety and depression. Sociological ๐Ÿ”ท The social pressure to be skinny and thinspiration (skinny is beautiful). ๐Ÿ”ท Models and dancers are the most likely to develop anorexia. ๐Ÿ”ท Family pressure and bullying/teasing can cause low self-esteem and can trigger the "I am fat" self-talk. Mass Media ๐Ÿ”ท Constant exposure to mainstream media that projects 'Body Ideals' ๐Ÿ”ท Pro-anorexia websites suggesting the importance of achieving unhealthy body ideals and the strong need to attain them. ๐ŸŽ Symptoms ๐Ÿ”Ž Low body mass index (BMI) ๐Ÿ”Ž Amenorrhea (Absence of menstruation) ๐Ÿ”Ž Sudden weight loss ๐Ÿ”Ž Strict calorie counting ๐Ÿ”Ž Food rituals (Eating small and slow, cutting food into tiny pieces, 'Do not eat in front of others' rule, eating in front of a mirror etc.) ๐Ÿ”Ž Lanugo (fine hair growth all over face and body) ๐Ÿ”Ž Hair thinning ๐Ÿ”Ž Constant stepping of weighing scale ๐Ÿ”Ž Purging at any costs (laxative, diet pills, weight management pills etc) ๐Ÿ”Ž Excessive exercise ๐Ÿ”Ž Cold intolerance ๐Ÿ”Ž Depression, anxiety, and insomnia ๐Ÿ”Ž Chronic fatigue ๐Ÿ”Ž Muscle cramps due to lack of potassium in the body ๐Ÿ”Ž Self-loathing, self-harm and negative self-talk ๐Ÿ”Ž Solitude ๐Ÿ”Ž Skin discoloration (Yellow skin and orange feet) ๐ŸŽ What Anorexics' Brain Has to Say In school and sports, anorexic kids learn and live to achieve perfection. Strict schedules of studying and sports practice might be the number one priority for these children. They need to be flawless! They don't know how to stop most of the times, if they do, they will feel like failures. At work, they are highly productive teammates and leaders. Ever wondered why? Anorexics' brains are wired to WILLPOWER and HEIGHTENED SELF CONTROL (for good and the worst ones). It is not by choice! ๐ŸŽ Types of Treatment ๐ŸŒผ Diet (Refeeding) ๐Ÿ”ถ Introduce more food variety to get started. ๐Ÿ”ถ Starting slowly and gradually increase the amount of food intake. ๐ŸŒผ Family-based treatment therapy (FBT) ๐Ÿ”ถ Conjoint family therapy (CFT) --> Parent and children seeing the same therapist. ๐Ÿ”ถ Separated family therapy (SFT) --> Parent and children attend therapy appointments separately with different therapists. ๐Ÿ”ถ Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) --> Acceptance and commitment therapy/Cognitive remediation therapy ๐ŸŒผ Hospitalization When hospitalized, refeeding is the only crucial treatment that will be given but it can be difficult with the patient consent since refeeding syndrome (RFS) can cause underfeeding and longer admission time. Therefore it is recommended for the medical team and psychiatric experts to team up to in severe AN disorder. ๐ŸŽ Conclusion It is important for AN awareness to be spread because our society has portrayed a beauty standard, especially to women that not just unhealthy but unattainable. It's time to talk about it and starts early intervention especially for the affected and high-risk teenagers by encouraging them to get screened and seek help. ๐ŸŽ Resources for Anorexia Nervosa Disorder National Eating Disorder Association www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/get-involved/nedawareness [http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/get-involved/nedawareness] Recovery & Relapse www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/learn/general-information/recovery [http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/learn/general-information/recovery] Helpline www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline [http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline] Screening tool www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/screening-tool [http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/screening-tool] ๐ŸŽ References www.mirror-mirror.org/anorexia-statistics.htm [http://www.mirror-mirror.org/anorexia-statistics.htm] anad.org/education-and-awareness/about-eating-disorders/eating-disorders-statistics/ [http://anad.org/education-and-awareness/about-eating-disorders/eating-disorders-statistics/] www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/02/150219101345.htm [https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/02/150219101345.htm] www.sciencenews.org/article/anorexic-brain [https://www.sciencenews.org/article/anorexic-brain] ๐Ÿ’ž Discussion Questions ๐Ÿ’ž 1. An Honors Project: ๐Ÿ’ป Internet Addiction and the Relationship with Mental Health ๐Ÿง
Addiction Support / by MieraCurie
Last post
March 3rd, 2019
...See more Hi peeps! ๐Ÿ’– In this post, I would like to raise awareness about internet addiction and what it does to your brain and your life! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ”Œ What is Internet Addiction? Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), is also commonly referred to as Compulsive Internet Use (CIU), Problematic Internet Use (PIU), or iDisorder. It is simply characterized by compulsion with the Internet by using excessively till it interferes your life. Though it is not recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as a disorder, 1 in 8 Americans exhibit this behavior and affect their daily life and healthy relationships. That is 12 percent! Some reports even suggest it affected Koreans by 30 percent. Is going online our new lifestyle? ๐Ÿ˜ง ๐Ÿ”Œ Are you dealing with IAD? If you agree with most of the statements below, yes you might be dealing with IAD! ๐Ÿ“Œ I think about being online almost constantly. If I'm not online, I'm thinking about the next time I can be or that last time that I was. ๐Ÿ“Œ I need to online longer and longer each time before I feel satisfied. ๐Ÿ“Œ I have tried to control, reduce, or stop my internet use, but haven't been able to do so successfully. ๐Ÿ“Œ I feel irritable or depressed when I try to reduce the amount of time that I am on the Internet or when I can't get online. ๐Ÿ“Œ The way I use the Internet has threatened a relationship with someone I care about, my job, or my school work. ๐Ÿ“Œ I lose track of time when I'm online. ๐Ÿ“Œ I sometimes lie to important people in my life about the amount of time I spend, or the types of activities I participate in on the Internet. ๐Ÿ“Œ Being online helps me to forget about my problems or improve my mood when I'm feeling sad, anxious, or lonely. ๐Ÿ”Œ There are 5 types of IAD! ๐Ÿ”” Cybersexual: Cybersex and Pornography ๐Ÿ”” Net compulsion: Online gambling, shopping, or stock trading ๐Ÿ”” Cyber-relationships: Social media, online dating, and other virtual communication ๐Ÿ”” Gaming: Online game playing ๐Ÿ”” Information Seeking: Web surfing or database searches ๐Ÿ”Œ What Gender Affect IAD? Both men and women are affected. While men are more addicted to gaming, cybersex and online gambling, women are addicted to instant messaging, social media and online shopping! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ”Œ Symptoms of IAD ๐Ÿ”Ž A withdrawal symptoms like depression and moodiness. ๐Ÿ”Ž Dishonesty about internet usage. ๐Ÿ”Ž Feelings of guilt when not responding or missing out. ๐Ÿ”Ž Feelings of euphoria when using the computer or using the internet to escape problems. ๐Ÿ”Ž Inability to prioritize or keep schedules. ๐Ÿ”Ž Avoidance of work and procrastination. ๐Ÿ”Ž Boredom with routine tasks. ๐Ÿ”Ž Neglecting rest and sleep to stay online. ๐Ÿ”Ž Online time affects work and school. ๐Ÿ”Œ The Impact of IAD on Mental Health People with IAD are evidenced to have a brain makeup similar to chemical dependency sufferers i.e. [http://i.e./] Drugs and alcohol! IAD affect the pleasure center of the brain. Addictive behavior triggers a release of dopamine to promote the pleasurable experience. Over time, more addictive activity is needed to produce dopamine which results in dependency. IAD physically change the brain structure, the amount of gray and white matter in regions of the prefrontal brain. Prefrontal brain engages with some processes such as: ๐Ÿ”ท Remembering details ๐Ÿ”ท Attention ๐Ÿ”ท Planning ๐Ÿ”ท Prioritizing tasks No wonder of IAD affects your capability to prioritize tasks in your life! ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜ฐ ๐Ÿ”Œ Types of Treatment ๐Ÿ’ก At home treatment ๐Ÿ’– Moderate use of the Internet. ๐Ÿ’– Abstinence of problematic/trigger applications. ๐Ÿ’– Track screen time and application usage using app E.g: QualityTime ๐Ÿ’– Exercise to increase dopamine level! ๐Ÿ’ก Psychosocial Treatment Cognitive behavioral therapy ๐Ÿ”ท Phase 1: Modification of behavior (to control internet usage) -> Examine time online and offline. ๐Ÿ”ท Phase 2: Cognitive restructuring (to challenge cognitive distortion) -> Identify, challenge and modify the rationalizations behind the reasons for excessive internet usage. ๐Ÿ”ท Phase 3: Harm reduction therapy (to address the co-morbid issue) -> Identify co-morbid factors, sustain the recovery and prevent relapse. Other popular treatments are motivational interviewing, reality therapy, Naikan cognitive psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy, and multimodal psychotherapy. ๐Ÿ’ก Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation Electrical nerve stimulation using a certain frequency that adjusts the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. ๐Ÿ’ก Pharmacologic therapy Treat IAD by treating other underlying disorders. ๐Ÿ”Œ Conclusion Any type of addiction can hurt you and life in general, including the life of your loved ones. The key to any addiction is to track the dependency and measure your self-control. Often this behavior comes and goes for normal people but if you need help, it is necessary to seek assistance with a professional and the IAD community to recover and sustain the healing progress. ๐Ÿ”Œ Resources for IAD virtual-addiction.com/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/] www.zurinstitute.com/resources/psychology-of-the-web/psychology-of-the-web-internet-addiction/ [https://www.zurinstitute.com/resources/psychology-of-the-web/psychology-of-the-web-internet-addiction/] ๐Ÿ”Œ Online tests for IAD virtual-addiction.com/smartphone-compulsion-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/smartphone-compulsion-test/] virtual-addiction.com/cybersexual-abuse-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/cybersexual-abuse-test/] virtual-addiction.com/virtual-addiction-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/virtual-addiction-test/] virtual-addiction.com/digital-distraction-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/digital-distraction-test/] virtual-addiction.com/online-pornography-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/online-pornography-test/] virtual-addiction.com/warning-signs-of-internet-addiction/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/warning-signs-of-internet-addiction/] virtual-addiction.com/child-technology-test/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/child-technology-test/] virtual-addiction.com/greenfield-video-game-addiction-test-gvgat/ [https://virtual-addiction.com/greenfield-video-game-addiction-test-gvgat/] ๐Ÿ”Œ References www.techaddiction.ca/internet_addiction_statistics.html [https://www.techaddiction.ca/internet_addiction_statistics.html] www.psycom.net/iadcriteria.html [https://www.psycom.net/iadcriteria.html] www.mentalhealthamerica.net/conditions/risky-business-internet-addiction [http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/conditions/risky-business-internet-addiction] ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’• Discussion Questions!
