Holidays

...See more There is something about running calls when the house you go into is decorated for a holiday. Something about the way you know that family will be spending the holiday in the hospital or grieving. Doing CPR next to a Christmas tree or starting a line next to the holiday meal. Years of these calls have left those same holidays a PTSD trap of triggers and ghosts. I usually work if I can because now I'm one of those ghosts. A living ghost watching the festivities with the sick feeling that although my family is there and nothing is wrong, I no longer am present and the ghosts in my head make it feel dangerous and sad.

...See more I woke up early this morning having another panic attack not sure where I was. I've posted a few times here. The problem is that there's a big gas lighting effect on EMS and mental health. The people who akgnowledge it do it in all the wrong ways causing more psychological destress to people who run some horrible stuff for a living. Yesterday a genuinely concerned person said this: "So you're a paramedic huh?" Me: "yeah" her: "you must see some horrible car accidents then, huh?" Me: "....uh yeah." Her:"how do you cope with that?" Me in my head: "drink hard and avoid talking to people like you." Outloud: "as well as one can ma'am." It's hard not to think about them after those kinds of questions.

Frustrated

...See more I face real life and death situations a lot, not every day but often. It's frustrating that there's no one else out there in healthcare to talk about it. I walked out of a threatening situation today. Now I'm here feeling the rollercoaster of feels one gets after near death experiences. It's hard to listen to people complaining about breakups when I'm terrified one of these days I won't come home from work. Also it's hard going from a situation of chaos and then taking the kids to the park an hour later. Am I the only one?

...See more Hi, I appreciate a space (even a forum) where EMS (and other medical people) can talk. I feel like while there is growing awareness for the mental health toll we face doing our jobs every day, there is no place for us to actually talk or get support. Talking even abstractly about the bad calls tends to end up in people either telling us they don't want to hear it, or telling us to go somewhere else. There are no places I have found to date that allow us to do that. So thanks @jaguar and others who are starting this forum. It's a start at least and perhaps someday we can actually have a room to chat too. Alex, EMT-B.
